Newport: Cultural center gets voters' OK
Staff report Maine Sunday Telegram Sunday, March 4, 2007

Voters at Saturday's town meeting approved funding to run a new cultural center as part of a municipal budget of slightly more than $2.15 million.
The budget is about 6.6 percent greater than the 2006 budget.
Officials hope to break ground for the Newport Cultural Center this spring, Town Manager Jim Ricker said. The center will be home to the town's library and its historical society. Voters allocated $17,356 to run the facility, including heat and electricity.
Residents approved $4,605 for elections, rather than the $4,005 proposed by the Budget Committee.
The extra money will help make the Sebasticook Valley Community Center handicapped-accessible.
In Friday's elections, Allen J. Graves, Jr. defeated Matthew Brann and Peter Roof to serve the year left on former selectman Jim Brann's term.
