Laura Armstrong, daughter of Betts and C.D. Armstrong of Scarborough, was elected to the Cum Laude Society as a senior and received the Irvil K. Pease Award, an award voted upon by the Upper School and given to a senior who exemplifies the spirit of Waynflete. Committed to volunteerism, Laura received a Community Service Award for her work as a co-founder of the African Orphanage Awareness group, a volunteer in Waynflete's Admission Office, a mentor for local elementary students, and a volunteer for Strive University, a school that assists people with developmental disabilities. Laura also spent one summer in Nicaragua, where she taught English and assisted with service projects in various schools. Named an Academic All-American and an Honorable Mention All-American in lacrosse, Laura was captain of the School's varsity lacrosse team for two years and played on the "Maine Futures Lacrosse" travel team. She also received a Sportsmanship Award for her commitment to Waynflete's varsity lacrosse and soccer teams. Laura will attend Bowdoin College.
Jacob Coppola, son of Ronna and Sam Coppola of Yarmouth, was elected to the Cum Laude Society as a senior. A co-president of Waynflete's Student Council, Jacob served as a vocal and positive student leader for four years. Jacob worked as an Admission Office volunteer both as an event coordinator and a lead tour guide throughout Upper School. His leadership extended to the School's performing arts program, where he held leading roles in theatrical productions in plays such as The Philadelphia Story and Romeo and Juliet. Jacob also founded the Drama Performance Club as a sophomore. Jacob was an integral member of the varsity lacrosse team for four years, played on the varsity basketball team for two years, and participated in a range of community service activities, including serving as a mentor for young children. Jacob will attend Columbia University.
Tess Crain, daughter of Kaye Lawrence and William Crain of Pownal, was elected to the Cum Laude Society as a junior. A National Merit Commended Student, Tess received Waynflete's Dow Cup for Writing and a Community Service Award, for her work as a tutor at a local community center. An accomplished athlete and thespian, Tess played prominent roles on Waynflete's athletic fields and stage. Tess was a member of the varsity cross country team for four years, earning distinction as the number two runner on the School's state championship squad, and as co-captain of Waynflete's first outdoor track team. In addition to singing in the School's chorus and a cappella group, she played bass guitar in an area rock band, Tess held lead roles in a number of Waynflete theatrical productions, including The Philadelphia Story. She was also a member of Model UN, the Science Olympiad team, and served as an Admission Office tour guide. Tess will attend Wesleyan University.
Westley Engel, son of Betsy Van Betuw of Portland and David Engel of Westbrook, was elected to the Cum Laude Society as a junior. Recognized as a National Merit Finalist, Westley also received Waynflete's Josephine Detmer Award for History in his senior year. An accomplished musician, Westley was a member of an area rock band who wrote original music that was performed regularly on campus and in the greater Portland area. Westley also held a leadership role in the School's Musical Outreach Program, which organizes musical performances for area nursing homes. He performed in a number of drama productions, including this spring's production of The Curious Savage, contributed to the School's newspaper as a junior, and facilitated children's groups for Kid's First, an organization that provides support for families undergoing transitions. Westley will attend Tufts University.
Emma Morgenstern, daughter of Moriah Moser and Daniel Morgenstern of Brunswick, was elected to the Cum Laude Society as a junior. Recognized as a National Merit Finalist, Emma received Waynflete's Barbara Freeman Award for Literary Scholarship and the Linguistic Excellence Award in her senior year. Emma was a four-year member of the Student Council, serving as co-president for two years. She was also a leader in Waynflete's Human Rights Activity group, Model United Nations program, and a decorated member of the Science Olympiad team. Emma also mentored students from a local public school. She has been a driving force on the junior varsity soccer, basketball, and tennis teams, often leading these teams as captain or receiving performance awards at the end of the season. An integral member of the Waynflete Chorus, Emma also participated in several musical productions. Emma plans to attend Tufts University.
Anando Naqui, son of Munira and Ali Naqui of Falmouth, was elected to the Cum Laude Society as a senior. Anando received Waynflete's Vergn Hewes Science Award and a Community Service Award in his senior year. Anando has played an integral role on the varsity lacrosse team, as well as the varsity Nordic ski team. A decorated member of the Upper School Science Olympiad team for the last two years, Anando worked extensively with the Middle School Science Olympiad team as they prepared for competition. He also served as captain of this year's mock trial team. Outside of Waynflete, Anando spent one summer volunteering as a research intern at the Maine Medical Center Research Institute and volunteered at the Shaker Village in Sabbathday Lake for one summer. An accomplished cellist, Anando played a prominent role in the Portland Youth Symphony. Anando will attend the University of Illinois.
Halsey Niles, son of Anne and Ben Niles of South Freeport, was elected to the Cum Laude Society as a junior. Recognized as a National Merit Finalist, Halsey was also the recipient of Waynflete's Margaret Chenery Math Award in his senior year. An active member of the Environmental Club, Halsey's interest in environmental awareness and sustainability inspired him to lead various composting and recycling initiatives at Waynflete. Halsey was a key member of the Nordic ski team, which has won the state championship for the last two years, was a captain of the varsity tennis team, and played competitive ultimate Frisbee for several years. A decorated leader of the Science Olympiad team, Halsey also volunteered at Maine Children's Cancer Program Development Office, where he organized a swim-a-thon fundraiser. Halsey served as a Student Government representative and performed in several stage productions throughout Upper School, most recently The Curious Savage. Halsey plans to attend Brown University.
Lucas O'Neil, son of Cindy and Tim O'Neil of South Portland, was elected to the Cum Laude Society as a senior. A recipient of the Student Athlete Award, Lucas served as co-captain of the varsity soccer, basketball, and baseball teams and played a key role on the varsity lacrosse team. Lucas also received Waynflete Coach's Awards in both soccer and basketball, and was selected to play for the Western Maine All-Conference Basketball's First Team, two Maine AAU teams and in the Elite Annual Seacoast Tournament. A trained vocalist, Lucas co-founded Waynflete's male a cappella group and was a member of the School's chorus. Lucas received a Community Service Award, in his junior year, for his work as co-leader of Waynflete's Community Service Activity, a volunteer with the African Orphanage Awareness group, a mentor for local elementary students in need, and a summer soccer camp counselor. Lucas will attend Bowdoin College.
Thomas Ryan, son of Jenny Scheu and John Ryan of Portland, was elected to the Cum Laude Society as a junior. A National Merit Commended Student, Thomas served as an integral member of the varsity soccer and lacrosse teams throughout Upper School. He also helped the varsity Nordic team win last year's state championship title. A gifted artist, Thomas supplemented his Waynflete course work by spending a summer at the Rhode Island School of Design. Inspired by two service trips to La Romana in the Dominican Republic, Thomas participated in a number of class and community service activities. He also spent two summers at Pine Island Camp on Belgrade Lake to learn about wilderness survival skills. Thomas will attend the University of California at Berkeley.
Addie Thompson, daughter of Peg and Nat Thompson of Cape Elizabeth, was elected to the Cum Laude Society and received a Community Service Award as a junior. Named an Academic All-American and a member of the All-Conference second team in lacrosse her junior year, Addie coached at Waynflete's Summer Lacrosse Camp for two summers, and joined the year-round travel team "Maine Futures Lacrosse" this past fall. Addie also played varsity soccer at Waynflete and ice hockey for a local team for three years. Her commitment to volunteerism included serving as a co-founder of Upper School Global Focus, a series of cultural and learning activities inspired by a summer service trip to Malawi, a volunteer with the African Orphanage Awareness group, a delegate to Model United Nations, an Admission tour guide, and a mentor to elementary school students. Addie held lead roles in a number of Waynflete theatrical productions, including Romeo and Juliet, and performed with the School's a cappella group. Addie will attend Brown University.
Margaret Veroneau, daughter of Nancy and Vincent Veroneau of Portland, was elected to the Cum Laude Society in her senior year. A recipient of Waynflete's Student Athlete Award, Margaret contributed to three varsity sports for all four years of Upper School. She served as captain for the varsity basketball team for three years, was a starting member of the varsity lacrosse team for three years, led the cross country team for two years, and then joined the varsity girl's soccer team, which won the conference championship this past year. As a junior, Margaret received a Community Service Award for her active participation in a community-mentoring program, her work as a basketball coach for several local summer camps, in addition to her work with Camp Sunshine, the School's Make-A-Wish club, and the Athletic Service club. Margaret also spent one summer in the Junior Volunteer Program at Maine Medical Center and was a key volunteer for Waynflete's Admission Office. Margaret will attend Boston College.
Holly Whitney, daughter of Betsy Ham and Warren Whitney of Bowdoinham, was elected to the Cum Laude Society in her junior year. Holly received the School's Barbara Freeman Award for Literary Scholarship as a senior. A Waynflete Scholar for three straight years, a designation given to a student who has no grade below an A-, Holly was an integral member of the varsity Nordic team, a team that won the state championship twice while she was a member. Named the most valuable player of the girls' Nordic team twice, Holly also qualified for the Junior Olympics twice. Holly was a member of the varsity cross country and junior varsity lacrosse teams. She received a Community Service Award for her work with Waynflete's Human Rights Organization and as a mentor to local elementary students. Holly was also an active participant in an outdoor adventure camp in Northern Minnesota. Holly will attend Williams College.
Nina Whitney, daughter of Betsy Ham and Warren Whitney of Bowdoinham, was elected to the Cum Laude Society as a junior. A National Merit Commended Student, Nina was recognized as a Waynflete Scholar, a designation given to a student who has no grade below an A- through a given year, for all four years of Upper School. Nina also played an integral role on the varsity cross country and Nordic ski teams. As co-captain of the Nordic team, Nina's performance contributed to the team's most recent state championship title. An avid horseback rider, Nina competed in annual equestrian events and volunteered at a local therapeutic riding center for children with disabilities. She contributed to the School's Science Olympiad team, Amnesty International club, served as a mentor for local elementary students, and acted as an Admission Office tour guide. Nina was also an active participant in white water wilderness camps. Nina will attend Carleton College.
Maggie Yarmartino, daughter of Gina Yarmartino of South Portland and Tom Yarmartino of Stoneham, Massachusetts, was elected to the Cum Laude Society as a senior. Passionate about the arts, Maggie has taken voice lessons since Middle School and has been an active member of Waynflete's performing arts program throughout Upper School. She was a four-year member of the School's chorus, sang in the student-run a cappella group for three years, and performed in many of the School's musical productions including Anything Goes and Once on This Island. Maggie played a key role in the Junior and Senior Class Leadership groups, where she organized several important class events and projects. Maggie is also a decorated member of the Science Olympiad team and an active member of the Science Club. Maggie will attend New York University.
Jess Zellinger, daughter of Meg and David Zellinger of Bowdoinham, was elected to the Cum Laude Society and recognized as a National Merit Finalist as a senior. Throughout Upper School, Jess participated in the School's chorus and sang in two student-run a cappella groups. She was a member of the varsity field hockey team for four years and contributed to the junior varsity lacrosse team throughout Upper School. Jess played an integral role as a class representative for student government and was an active member in the Junior and Senior Class Leadership groups, where she organized issues relevant to her grade that included periodic class meetings and plans for Waynflete's "Grade Advising Day." Jess was also a decorated leader in the Model United Nations program, during which she received a diplomacy award for her mediation of an international crisis. Jess will attend Pomona College.
