Thornton Academy
Top of the Class
Teresa Scontras is valedictorian of the graduating class at Thornton Academy. As a member of Academic Decathlon for the past three years, she took part in math and essay competitions, was the team high scorer her senior year and won the bronze medal in a state interview. As a member of National Honor Society (NHS), Scontras served as correspondent secretary. She has been in Interact Club for the past two years, joined the Math Club her senior year and was a member of the prom committee in her junior year. Scontras has also been active in sports, participating in indoor track as an undergraduate and spending the past four years on TA's soccer and softball teams. She was captain of her freshman soccer team and junior varsity soccer team. In addition, Scontras has been involved in the Saco Girls' Little League, scoring games, announcing games and working the concession stand. In 2007, she was honored with a career achievement award for her dedication to and leadership within the league. Other awards include the Princeton Book Award, the Rensselaer Medal, Saint Michael's Book Award, Williams College Book Award, the RIT Computing Award, the MPA Principal's Award as well as the Southwestern Maine Activities Association (SMAA) All Academic All Star recognition. Scontras plans to attend Johns Hopkins University to study biology or biomolecular engineering and to eventually attend medical school and become a pediatrician. She is the daughter of Mary and Stanley Scontras of Saco.
Morgan Brockington participated in Chamber Singers her junior and senior years and Treble Choir her freshman and sophomore years. She played piano for the jazz band as a sophomore and took part in two TA musicals: "Crazy for You" and "West Side Story." She is a two-year member of the Spanish Club, acting as its president her senior year, and has also been in the Latin Club for two years. In addition, she joined the Math Club her senior year, is a member of NHS and the Student Council and participated in Amnesty International for four years. She's also been active with the Interact Club at TA, serving as its secretary her junior year and vice president her senior year. In sports, Brockington was on the field hockey team her freshman, sophomore and junior years, serving as captain of the freshman team. She also played lacrosse her freshman year. Awards include the St. Laurence Book Award in 2007 and Channel 6's Maine Teens Who Care Award in 2006. Brockington is a two-year member of the United Church of Christ Maine State Youth Council, volunteered in a variety of First Parish Congregational Church activities including a week-long mission trip to New Orleans in January 2007, and helped with Mary's Walk the past four years. Brockington plans to attend the University of Maine at Orono, where she will major in pre-med/biology and minor in Spanish. After completing medical school, she wants to travel and practice medicine with Doctors Without Borders. She is the daughter of John and Cathy Brockington of Saco.
Samantha Buttarazzi is a mentor to sixth-grade students at Thornton Academy's Middle School and also takes part in volunteer projects through NHS. Buttarazzi has served as the NHS recording secretary this past year. Also as a senior, she served as class representative and took part in the Math Club. As an undergraduate she was in Interact Club as a sophomore and junior and took part in French Club her sophomore year. Athletics have also kept Buttarazzi busy: She played soccer her freshman, sophomore and junior years, indoor track her sophomore and senior years, and outdoor track her senior year. Buttarazzi also enjoys dance and has performed in ballet, jazz, tap and lyrical. Awards include the Rotary Youth Leadership Award in 2006. She also took part in the Maine Youth Leadership Conference in 2006. After graduation, she plans to attend the University of Maine at Orono on a Presidential Distinguished Scholar Award. She wants to enter its Honors Program as a biology major with a minor in dance. She is the daughter of James and Donna Buttarazzi of Arundel.
Rebecca Chenard has shown her interest in the area of foreign language studies by joining the French Club in her sophomore year and subsequently the Russian Club and German Club in her senior year. She served as president of the Russian Club during the 2007-08 school year. Chenard is a member of NHS, joined the Mentoring Club her senior year and was in Concert Band her freshman year. She's been active with Amnesty International the past three years and served as its coordinator as both a junior and senior. The past two years, she's been on the swimming and diving team. She also swam for a competitive club team in Portland for several years. At home, she and her family take care of kittens for the Kennebunk Animal Welfare Society until the animals are large enough to be adopted permanently. Chenard plans to attend Colby College, where she will major in Russian. She is the daughter of Jody Powers and Roger Chenard, both of Saco.
Veronica Foster is active with Carpe Diem, TA's student newspaper. She served as its editor her junior year and its editor-in-chief her senior year. Her involvement with NHS has allowed her to serve as vice president of the group. She also demonstrated her leadership abilities as consul of the Latin Club this past year. As an undergraduate, she was involved with Amnesty International as a sophomore and junior and Interact Club as a freshman, sophomore, and junior. Foster played field hockey team her freshman, sophomore and junior years and lacrosse her freshman and sophomore years. In addition, she was a member of the executive committee of Youth for the Maine United Church of Christ for two years and participates in a number of First Parish Congregational Church volunteer activities. Foster was the Latin CANE Paper winner in the state of Maine her junior year. She plans to attend Colby College in the fall and is the daughter of David and Patricia Foster of Saco.
Bridget Hudson is a member of NHS and has been active with the A-Team, an AIDS awareness group at Thornton Academy, in her sophomore, junior and senior years. As a freshman and sophomore, she participated in the Arts Club, Concert Band and Marching Band. She was chosen to represent TA at the Haystack Arts Institute in 2007. In addition, during her freshman, sophomore and junior years, she played soccer. Hudson's volunteer activities have allowed her to help at Bon Appetit Soup Kitchen, Pumpkinfest, the Children's Winter Carnival, LaKermesse, Fall Clean Up, Mary's Walk, Ocean Park Beach Clean Up and Day of Caring. She is a member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. Hudson plans to attend Simmons College and major in arts administration. She is the daughter of Alden Hudson and Jade Elliott of Ocean Park.
Amanda Martemucci has been cheering fellow Thornton Academy student athletes for all four years of high school and served as captain of the winter cheer squad in her senior year. She was among the TA students who received the SMAA's All-Academic Team Award for cheerleading in the fall and winter of 2007-08 as well as its All-Conference Team 2nd Team Award in 2007-08. Martemucci also played softball her freshman year and played on the Saco Senior League Softball squad her freshman through junior years. In addition, she's been in Concert Band for the past four years, is a member of NHS and joined the Math Club her senior year. She's volunteered in the Writing Assistants program and donated her time to Mary's Walk in 2007 and 2008. Martemucci plans to attend the University of Maine at Farmington and wants to major in Secondary Education with an emphasis on English instruction. She is the daughter of James and Maria Martemucci of Arundel.
Emma Morrison has been an active member of the Student Council, serving as class treasurer in her freshman, sophomore and junior years and as student body vice president in her senior year. She's also been involved in athletics, playing basketball and soccer the past four years and serving as captains of both sports during the 2007-08 school year. She also played softball in her freshman through junior years and joined the lacrosse team her senior year. In addition, Morrison is a member of NHS, a two-year member of the Math Club, and she took part in Interact Club and the Student Advisory Board. Her awards include the McDonald's Basketball All-Academic Award in her senior year as well as three others she received as a junior: the AP Scholars Award, the Phi Beta Kappa Academic Achievement Award and the Society of Women Engineers Award. Morrison volunteers with a variety of organizations through NHS and also helps with the Knights of Columbus Thanksgiving Dinner each year. She plans to attend North Carolina State University and major in biology. She is the daughter of Jack and Sheri Morrison of Saco.
Luke Nielson has demonstrated his technical talents as a four-year member of TATV, Thornton Academy's television production club, which provides programming for Saco's local channel 3. He served as TATV's creative director the past year and helped create a series of public service announcements on living positive and being drug- and alcohol-free. The ads placed second recently in the Joe Bornstein Arrive Alive Creative Contest. As a member of NHS, Nielson has taken part in a variety of volunteer activities, including serving at the Bon Appetit Soup Kitchen. He's also volunteered at Mary's Walk the past four years. Nielson has also demonstrated interest in TA athletics, playing golf and lacrosse for four years and taking part in Ski Club activities throughout his high school career as well. Nielson won the St. Michael's Book Award his junior year and plans to attend the Maine Maritime Academy in the fall to major in International Business and Logistics. He hopes to become a logistician and work for a larger shipping company. He is the son of Harry and Deborah Nielson of Saco.
Chelsea Noble is a four-year member of the French Club and served as vice president of the group her sophomore year and as president her junior and senior years. She was also co-consul of the Latin Club in 2007-08, which she joined as a junior. Noble has been in Academic Decathlon and TA choral groups throughout her high school career. She's been a member of NHS and Amnesty International her junior and senior years, a class officer in Student Council her senior year and a member of the Interact Club her sophomore, junior and senior years. Noble has been on the swimming and diving club for four years and played tennis her freshman and sophomore years. Her awards include the Wellesley College Book Award and the AP Scholar Award her junior year. Also as a junior, Noble was named magna cum laude in Latin II in the 2007 National Latin Exam. As a senior, she won the National Merit Scholarship Commended Student Award and received the York County Swim Officials Scholarship. Noble has volunteered in a variety of activities through NHS and Interact Club as well as through faith-based activities. She's a member of the Biddeford-Saco Catholic Youth Ministry and has been chairperson since 2006 for the Notre Dame de Lourdes School Alumni Association. Noble plans to attend Bowdoin College and may pursue a degree in International Relations and French. She is the daughter of Julie and Robert Noble of Saco.
