Falmouth High School

Top of the Class

Mary Bruen is the daughter of Phil and Janet Bruen of Falmouth. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has been recognized for academic achievement in math, world history, biology, Spanish, and English. While at McAuley High School, she served as the Class President and was an award winner in several Public Forum Debate tournaments. She currently serves as a Student Representative on the Executive Board at Falmouth. She has participated in Blunt Youth Radio, the Drug Awareness Group of Students programs, Key Club, and Model UN. She volunteered with Safe Passage in Guatemala for the past two summers, and served as a public relations assistant at Mercy Hospital. Mary has lettered in varsity lacrosse and soccer for four years. She was selected as best defensive player of her soccer team and was a Maine Class B All-Star and Western Maine All-Conference selection. She will attend the Davidson Honors College at the University of Montana and plans to major in Nursing or the sciences. She would like to thank all the teachers, students, and coaches who enhanced her education.


Sam Cobean, the son of Linda Rathbun and Roy Cobean of Falmouth, has been a three-season runner for four years and a team captain in both indoor track and cross-country. He received the spring Sportsmanship Award as a junior and coaches hurdles for Falmouth Middle School. He is a 2008 Western Maine Conference Citizenship Award recipient. He has played in the concert and jazz bands for four years and been a member of the District II Concert Band and All-State Jazz Band. Sam is a member of the math team and the National Honor Society. He is a National Merit Finalist and Presidential Scholar nominee. He likes skiing moguls when it's cold and playing Ultimate Frisbee when it's warm. Sam will attend Middlebury College in the fall.


Tiffany Dyck is the daughter of Thomas and Denise Dyck of Falmouth. In addition to her academics, Tiffany sings, plays piano, has enjoyed being a part of the Falmouth Theatre Company and is involved in Amnesty International, GORP Literary Magazine, and the National Honor Society. She stays active and has represented her school in cross country running, tennis and diving. Tiffany has been competitively cheerleading for four years, during which she and her team have won many competitions and last May, attended the Cheerleading World Championships. She enjoys many subjects in school but is specifically interested in art. This fall she will attend the University of Western Ontario's Ivey Business School, where she plans to blend her creativity with business practices. She has also been selected to join Western's Mustang Cheerleading Team, which has consistently been one of Canada's best teams. She will miss Falmouth and her friends, who made her three years in Maine an amazing experience.


Jessica Everett is the daughter of Stephen and Polly Everett of Falmouth. She is a National Merit Finalist and a member of the National Honor Society. She has been recognized for her achievements in biology and earth science. She has participated in student council and GORP Literary Magazine. Jessica sang with the Musica de Filia Concert choir and was a member of the District II chorus. In her senior year, she was a member of the swim team. She has been a volunteer for Mercy Hospital and Camp Sunshine, and is a student tutor. Her junior year was spent in Barcelona, Spain where she studied Spanish, and she greatly enjoyed her home stay and the chance to travel the country. Jessica is a veteran of the ballet, having become an apprentice to the Maine State Ballet in 2006, when she began to dance corps roles. She has performed in The Nutcracker for ten years. Jessica enjoys the outdoors and spends a great deal of time rock climbing, snow and water skiing. She will attend Bowdoin College in the fall where she plans to explore biology, environmental studies and psychology.


Emily Follo is the daughter of Mary and Tim Follo of Falmouth. Emily has embraced her four years at Falmouth and has strived to maintain a balance between academics, class involvement, volunteering, recreation and friends. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has received awards in earth and space science, biology, and French. Emily was honored to receive the Colby College book award and the Bausch & Lomb Scholarship. She has been a member of the Key Club, served as Student Council Vice President, and worked as managing editor of GORP Literary Magazine. She has loved the spirit and camaraderie of the Nordic Ski Team, Cross-Country and Outdoor track teams, and served as captain of these teams in 2007-2008. Emily was selected to receive a Mount Holyoke Leadership scholarship and will attend Mount Holyoke College this fall, majoring in science.


Anne Goodrich is the daughter of John and Judith Goodrich of Falmouth. She was elected a member of the National Honor Society, received the Boston College Book award, and has been recognized for academic achievements in Spanish, biology, and earth science. A three-year member of the varsity lacrosse team, she was also elected captain in her senior year and was mentioned as a top player to watch by the Portland Press Herald. Anne ran with the cross-country team for four years and with the indoor track team for three years. In her senior year, she received the Coaches' Award for cross-country. She played ice hockey for three years, including skating on the varsity team in her senior year. During her sophomore and senior years, Anne was a member of the Class Executive Board and participated in the Adventure Leadership program for two years. She has tutored math and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity on multiple occasions. Anne plans to attend Loyola College in Maryland in the fall.


Madeline Grygiel is the daughter of Stephen and Maureen Grygiel. Maddie is a member of the National Honor Society and received the Princeton Book Award, as well as recognition for academic achievement in Spanish, Advanced Placement literature, algebra II, and psychology. She participated in Key Club and Adventure Leadership and volunteered in the Safe Passage service program in Guatemala for two years. Maddie ran cross-country and track in Falmouth, where she was part of the winning 4x80 meter relay team at the 2008 Class B Indoor Track Championships, and won the 2007 Class B State Championship in the 2-mile. She also served as a co-captain of the cross-country team, was selected for Maine All-State, and was named the Forecaster's Fall 2007 Female Athlete of the Year. Maddie will attend the College of William and Mary, majoring in psychology.


Catherine Hayes is the daughter of Stephen Hayes and Carol McCarthy of Falmouth. She is the Class of 2008 valedictorian and the recipient of the MPA Principal's Award. She is a National Merit Scholarship Program Finalist and a Presidential Scholar nominee. Catherine received the Mount Holyoke College Book Award, awards in science, math, history, and French, the Arion Award, and the John Philip Sousa Band Award. An accomplished musician, she has played flute in the District II band, All State Band and Orchestra, Portland Youth Wind Ensemble, and Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra. She has enjoyed being a member of the math team throughout high school and has also participated in Amnesty International, the National Honor Society and the Key Club. Catherine has competed on the cross-country, Nordic skiing, and outdoor track teams. In the fall, she will be attending Middlebury College where she plans to major in math.


Nicole Jacobson, the daughter of Michael and Linda Jacobson of Falmouth, is an officer in the National Honor Society, received the Wellesley College Book Award, and has been recognized for academic achievement in Spanish, French, geometry, and earth science. She is the president of her Temple Youth Group, vice president of the Key Club and a member of the Falmouth High School Video Announcements. Nicole is also involved in a number of other activities and enjoys working with children. She has worked as a classroom aid and dance teacher's assistant and taught at Sugarloaf for the past two years. In the summers, Nicole works as a counselor at a day camp on Sebago. She will attend Colby College in the fall and plans to major in Spanish and international relations.


Anna Kellar is the daughter of Jeff Kellar and Judy LaBrasca of Falmouth. Anna is a National Merit Scholarship finalist and received the Smith Book award as well as academic awards in history and chemistry. She is the president of the Amnesty International Club, editor-in-chief of the literary magazine, and general news editor of the school newspaper. She is also a member of the National Honor Society. Anna has run cross-country for four years, and was a member of the varsity Nordic ski team. She has acted or been on the crew for fifteen Falmouth theatre productions, including the 2008 State Champion show "The Boor Hug", for which she won the set design award. Last summer, Anna was an exchange student to Italy. She has also been an intern for Barack Obama, and will be a delegate to the Maine State Democratic Convention in May. Anna will attend Yale University in the fall, and plans to major in political science and international studies.


Christopher Morrison is the son of Linda and Robert Morrison of Falmouth. Chris is a Presidential Scholar nominee and a National Merit Finalist and has won numerous academic awards in a variety of subjects at Falmouth High School. In addition to his scholastic pursuits, Chris is treasurer of the Student Council and the National Honor Society and is an enthusiastic participant in the D.A.G.S. mentoring program. He also helped lead Falmouth's boys tennis team to back-to-back Class B state titles during his three years as a first and second singles player. Chris is a two-time All-State Tennis Team selection and a three-time Western Maine First All-Conference Tennis Team selection, and was the Forecaster's spring 2006 pick for Falmouth High School's Most Outstanding Male Athlete Award. Chris will spend the summer traveling and packing in as many good times as possible with the friends he has grown up with, and will be attending Amherst College with an interest in pursuing economics.


Samuel Norton is the son of Brian and Millicent Norton of Falmouth. Sam has won academic awards in English, history and government classes and is a National Merit Finalist and an AP Scholar with Distinction. He has been in Jazz Band for four years, including two as first chair and has received top rating on solos at district and state festivals. On occasion he has also lent his talents to the Theatre Company Pit Band. Sam founded and captained a Relay for Life team that has participated in the event for three years. In the past, he has served on the Student Council and written columns for the school newspaper. He attended the Dirigo Boys State program in June of 2007. Recently, he joined the Falmouth Town Republican Committee and was named a delegate to the state convention. When not in school or involved with activities, Sam can often be found washing dishes at Becky's Diner. In his free time, he enjoys reading and skiing. Sam will attend Princeton University in the fall where he plans to major in politics.


Brian Seitz, the son of Bradley and Heidi Seitz of Falmouth, is the salutatorian of Falmouth's Class of 2008. Brian is also a National Merit Scholarship winner, a member of the National Honor Society and the Falmouth Math Team, and recipient of the Harvard Book Award, the Princeton Alumni Association Book Award and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Medal for excellence in science. He has received numerous awards for academic excellence during his high school years. Brian is an Eagle Scout, a Falmouth Congregational Church Youth Group Officer, and volunteer coach of the Falmouth Middle School math and track teams for the past four years. He is currently a captain of the Falmouth Indoor and Outdoor track teams, and has lettered in both sports for the past four years. He is class B state champion for the 400-meter dash, and was named to the all-state team by the Portland Press Herald for 2008. He represented Maine as part of the 4x400 relay team at the AT&T National Indoor Track and Field Championships for the past two years. Brian will be attending Dartmouth College in the fall, where he plans to study biomedical science.


Danielle Snowdon is the daughter of Ken and Mary Snowdon of Falmouth. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has been recognized for academic achievement in anatomy & physiology and earth science. Danielle is the secretary of Falmouth High School's chapter of Amnesty International, a member of the GORP Literary Magazine, and competed in the Science Olympiad where she won bronze medals in both Cell Biology and Disease Detectives. She is a 2008 graduate of Medical Explorers and has over 375 recorded hours of community service. Danielle ran cross-country and outdoor track for four years, indoor track for three years and was on the Nordic Ski team for one year. While on the Nordic Ski Team, she won the 2006-2007 Winter Sportsmanship Award. Danielle will attend Scripps College in the fall and plans to major in biology.


Rachel Vivianne Swerdlow is the daughter of Robert and Victoria Swerdlow, who have always fostered her intellectual and creative spirit. She was deeply involved in the GORP literary magazine, the school newspaper "The Mast," the math team, and Falmouth's civil rights team. She was also the secretary for the school chapter of Amnesty International and founded its Gay-Straight Alliance. In her free time, Vivianne sang for Wescustago Youth Chorale, Sing America barbershop group, and all of the school choirs at one time or another, as well as playing the trombone in the OOB gold medal marching band and at school. Her favorite volunteer activities were helping out in numerous ways at Falmouth Memorial Library and on Congressman Tom Allen's political campaigns. Academically, Vivianne was an AP Scholar and a National Merit Finalist, as well as being recognized in many other ways. Although a part of the class of 2008, she spent the first semester of her senior year at the University of Southern Maine in the early studies program and then graduated in January. She will be attending Wesleyan University in the fall and plans to major in English, with a possible five-year Master of Arts degree in education.


Chloe Wolf is the daughter of Alan and Karen Wolf of Falmouth. Chloe is a member of the National Honor Society, a National Merit Finalist, an AP Scholar with Honor, and has been recognized for her academic achievement in Spanish and Math. As a competitive figure skater, Chloe was the 2008 Novice National Ice Dance Champion. Throughout her four years in high school, she has also medaled at several regional and sectional competitions. She was named to the 2008 U.S. Figure Skating Scholastic Honors Team for her achievement in the classroom and on the ice. She has spent many hours volunteering and coaching young skaters through her local figure skating club. After spending a year competing nationally and internationally, Chloe will attend Duke University in the fall of 2009 and plans to major in political science or Spanish.
