Dianna Batt is the daughter of Dr. Christopher Batt and Mrs. Lorraine Gamberini of Newmarket, New Hampshire. She entered Berwick Academy in the ninth grade and was inducted into the Cum Laude Society as a senior. Dianna made the Headmasters Honors or High Honors list every semester, and she earned Departmental Recognition Awards in physics and in art. She was inducted into the National Spanish Honor Society in her sophomore year and became a member of the National Art Honor Society in her senior year. In the National Spanish Exam, Dianna earned sixth place in the state of Maine, while in her junior year she earned a bronze medal for the exam. Outside of school, she has been a dedicated student of the martial arts for six years, and has earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
For her senior project, she helped cook and assist at a cooking school. Dianna will be attending Stonehill College in the fall.
Emil Cashin, son of Thomas and Marie Cashin of Acton, Maine, was inducted into the Cum Laude Society as a junior. He has attended Berwick Academy since his freshman year, and has made High Honors consistently through the years. While at Berwick, Emil has run cross country and helped with the Recycling Committee for four years. He has also volunteered or been conscripted for theater productions in the past three years. As a junior, Emil participated in an outreach trip to work with the Portland branch of Habitat for Humanity. He is headed to Kentucky this summer for another outreach trip. Emil is also a member of the National Latin Honor Society. Emil has worked for the Acton-Shapleigh Youth Conservation Corps for the past two summers. This job convinced him to major in Environmental Engineering, which he will study next fall at Dartmouth. For a final senior project, Emil and a friend built and programmed a Guitar Hero-like game with an actual guitar.
Katherine "Katie" Edkins, daughter of Lauren and William Edkins of York, Maine, was inducted into the Cum Laude Society as a junior. She entered Berwick Academy in seventh grade, and has maintained High Honors throughout her past six years. She is a member of the National French Honor Society and, as a junior, Katie received a Departmental Recognition Award in English and the Brown University Book Award.
Katie has served as a student representative for the Honor Committee for the past two years. She also co-founded Berwick's upper school literary magazine, "The Vernacular," with her younger sister, and, this fall, Katie became a volunteer speaker for MEDA, the Multi Service Eating Disorder Association, in Newton, Massachusetts. She is a senior class student government representative and a member of the varsity basketball and softball teams.
For the first week of her senior project, Katie completed a personal writing project that she began this semester. For the second week, Katie worked with Berwick's lower school students, focusing on literacy activities.
This fall, Katie will attend Dartmouth College, where she plans to study English and Chinese. She would like to sincerely thank the Berwick community for the opportunities that have been offered to her.
Katie Graichen is the daughter of Dana and Andrea Graichen of Arundel, Maine. She entered the Academy in second grade and received Honors and High Honors during middle and upper school. She was inducted into the National French Honor Society as a sophomore, and into the Cum Laude Society as a senior. She received Departmental Recognition Awards in language and science, and scored highly on the National French Contest throughout her upper school years.
Katie was a member of Big and Little Buddies and Recycling Committee. In March of 2007, she participated in a Habitat for Humanity trip to Portland, Maine. She has played African drums since middle school and has played at recitals and several benefit concerts in the seacoast area. As a freshman, she was the recipient of a Gold Key Award for a painting that was part of a Scholastic Art exhibit at the Portland Museum of Art.
Katie is a three-season athlete. She was a four-year member of varsity softball, a two-year member of varsity soccer, and a two-year member of junior varsity hockey. She also played JV soccer, JV basketball, and lacrosse at Berwick. She received EIL All-League Honors for softball during all four seasons and captained the team in her senior year.
In the fall, Katie will attend the University of Vermont, where she was accepted to the Honors College. She would like to thank her family, friends, teachers, and coaches for their support during her time at Berwick.
Lisa Graichen, the daughter of Dana and Andrea Graichen of Arundel, Maine, has attended Berwick since the second grade. She was inducted into the Cum Laude Society in her junior year, as well as the National Spanish and Latin Honor Societies and the Tri-M Music Honor Society. She received Department Recognition Awards in math (grade 9) and language (grade 10), as well as the Ranking Scholar Award in the tenth grade and the Smith College Book Award in the eleventh grade. She has earned High Honors throughout upper school.
On and off campus, Lisa loves to play guitar. She has been playing since sixth grade and performs at school recitals and coffeehouses, as well as at various events and open mics throughout the Seacoast. She has done some recording and plays regularly at the Black Bean Cafe in Rollinsford, NH. Lisa also enjoys tutoring at a community center in Dover and playing JV softball. Last year, she went on a Habitat for Humanity trip to Portland, Maine, with a group of students. She participates in the math team and has competed at the Maine State Math Meet for the past three years. Some other interests include photography, ceramics, and reading.
In the fall, Lisa will attend Amherst College and hopes to study languages, American Studies, philosophy, and education, among other things. She thanks her family, friends, and teachers for all their support.
Margaux Elina Groux is the daughter of Roger and Lisa Groux of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She was inducted into the Cum Laude Society as a senior. She was accepted at George Washington University, McGill University, American University, NYU and Barnard College. Margaux will attend Barnard in the fall where she plans to study International Relations and languages.
Margaux has been at Berwick since kindergarten. She has made Honors every semester. She was inducted into the National Spanish Honor Society as a sophomore and the National French Honor Society as a senior. She received Departmental Recognition Awards in history, chemistry, and Spanish. As a junior, Margaux received the Harvard Book Award.
Margaux spent the second semester of her junior year studying abroad in Spain. She lived in a small town in Andalusia where she attended a public Spanish high school. While in Spain, she completed the rigorous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage and took Sevillana dance classes.
Margaux has participated in student government for four years. As a junior, Margaux was the student member on the Search Committee which selected the new head of school. Margaux is also an alternate member of the Honor Committee. She has played a sport for every season except when she was abroad; she has participated in basketball, tennis, softball, and soccer. As a staff member of The Vernacular, Margaux has written several essays and poems for the literary magazine. Margaux and her family have a passion for traveling. She will travel to Guatemala and Norway this summer. Margaux has also been following the elections closely and worked as an intern on the Richardson for President Campaign.
Olivia Hutton is the daughter of Roderic and Carolyn Hutton of Madbury, New Hampshire. She was inducted into the Cum Laude Society as a junior. Olivia will attend the University of Virginia as a Jefferson Scholar in the fall, where she plans to major in biology.
Olivia has attended Berwick Academy since grade 9 as a Berwick Scholar. She received Departmental Recognition Awards in chemistry and English and during her first two years placed first and fifth in state on the National Spanish Exam. As a junior, she received the Cogswell Book Award, the Bausch & Lomb Award, and the Chemistry Award, and represented Berwick at the National Chemistry Olympiad. She is also a National Merit Finalist.
Olivia has worked with the Outreach Committee since sophomore year. As a senior leader, she will be leading a service trip to Louisville, Kentucky after graduation, where twelve upper school students will run a day camp for Louisville sixth graders. She is also a student member of the Berwick Academy Green Committee. Olivia is a dancer with Company Blue and studies modern and ballet at Berwick. She performed in Oklahoma and The Sound of Music and is now a member of the tech crew.
Outside of school, Olivia has spent two summers involved in marine biology research with Dr. Win Watson at the University of New Hampshire, and plans to continue this summer studying horseshoe crab and lobster circadian rhythms under a National Science Foundation grant. She has also worked with Great Bay Coast Watch as a volunteer water quality tester.
For her senior project, Olivia worked at the Sarah Orne Jewett House in South Berwick, planning a guided walking tour of Jewett's town and training to become a tour guide at the Hamilton House, also in South Berwick.
Hannah Elizabeth Lamprey is honored to have been inducted into the Berwick Academy Cum Laude Society. She is the daughter of Stephen Lamprey of South Berwick, Maine and Diane Lamprey of Eliot, Maine. Hannah's older brother, Ian, is a 2004 graduate of Berwick Academy and just graduated from Boston University.
Hannah has been accepted into four colleges - Trinity College, Brandeis University, Vassar College, and the University of Vermont. She is currently enrolled in the University of Vermont Honors College and will attend in the fall. She will study biochemistry and will follow a premedical track with the intention of enrolling in medical school after her undergraduate studies.
Hannah entered Berwick Academy in sixth grade. After her first year at Berwick she was awarded the William Lambert Cogswell Book Award. Hannah spent six of her seven years at Berwick as a student government representative. She has also been a member of the Math Team during all four years of upper school. Hannah played nine seasons of sports during upper school, including varsity cross country and varsity lacrosse. She spent two years as a member of the Berwick Academy Street Singers and took part in three musicals. For multiple semesters she achieved High Honors while attending Berwick and has completed nine honors courses. She also completed AP courses in chemistry, physics, Spanish, calculus, and statistics.
For her senior project, Hannah spent time crafting quilts and learning new techniques. Quilting has been a passion of Hannah's and she was excited to have time to pursue the art in more depth. Hannah's years at Berwick have allowed her to pursue all of her passions, both academically and personally. The Academy is a place she will truly miss when she leaves the Hilltop, but she knows that all she has learned will undoubtedly support her in her future endeavors.
Samantha "Sam" Meader is the daughter of Stan and Colleen Meader of South Berwick, Maine. She has been at Berwick since her freshman year after moving from Massachusetts. While at Berwick, Sam has received Departmental Recognition Awards in history, English, and science. She also received the Cogswell Award in ninth grade, and has consistently made Headmasters High Honors or Honors. As a junior, she received the Middlebury College Book Award. She placed among the top ten in Maine for the national Spanish exam during all four years, and placed first in the state during her sophomore and junior years. She was inducted into the National Spanish Honor Society during her sophomore year. In the summer of 2005, Sam traveled with a group from Berwick Academy to Guatemala, where she participated in a community service project for a rural village school, and will again travel to Guatemala this summer.
At Berwick, Sam played soccer for four years and managed basketball teams in the winters during her first three years. She served as a two-year captain of the Berwick Academy Varsity Softball Team, which recently captured its first EIL Softball Championship to cap off an undefeated season. She has also been an active, although behind-the-scenes, member of the drama department, assisting with props and costumes, during her last three years of high school.
Sam's senior project involved a combination of cleaning and organizing Berwick's prop and costume closet and shadowing a local forensic pathologist. This fall Sam will attend Dartmouth College, where she plans to major in Spanish while fulfilling her premedical requirements. She hopes to become either a surgeon or a Spanish teacher but intends to pursue both until she can make up her mind.
Sam would like to thank her family, friends, coaches, and all of her teachers at Berwick, especially her Advisor, Mrs. Polly Davie, for making her high school years enjoyable, educational, and wildly entertaining.
Meg Platt is the daughter of Tim and Liz-Anne Platt of South Berwick, Maine, who are both teachers at Berwick Academy. She has been attending the school since sixth grade, and has been on the Honor Roll every year. Meg was inducted into both the Latin and Spanish National Honor Societies and received the Blue and White Award for school spirit in her junior year.
Meg has been an avid participant in the performing arts at Berwick, particularly with theater and dance. She played the role of Maria von Trapp in this year's winter musical, The Sound of Music and was a member of Berwick's Company Blue dance group, along with being enrolled in other dance classes.
In addition, Meg was the head of the school's Recycling Committee and actively involved in Outreach, Berwick Academy's service group. She participated in the alternate spring break trips offered by the school and worked with Habitat for Humanity in Portland, Maine, and in rural Appalachia, in West Virginia. Meg will participate in the school's third annual service trip after graduation. This year's destination is Louisville, Kentucky, where Meg and her fellow classmates will run a summer camp for underprivileged youth at Lassiter Middle School.
For her senior project, Meg stayed on the Berwick campus, where she assisted Terry Minihan and Amy Criswell in the first grade classroom. Next year, Meg will travel to Scotland to attend the University of St. Andrews, where she plans to major in International Relations. After graduating from college, Meg hopes to join the Peace Corps.
Cam Thorpe of Stratham, New Hampshire, son of Steve and Margie Thorpe, will attend the University of Notre Dame next fall, where he intends to major in engineering. Cam was also accepted at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Cam has attended Berwick Academy since the sixth grade. Last year, Cam was the recipient of the Rensselaer Math and Science Medal. He played twelve athletic seasons during high school at Berwick, as well as playing on outside hockey and baseball teams. For his senior project, Cam wrote and recorded original songs on a CD along with classmates Jeff Warnick and Sam Briggs.
Jeffrey Warnick, son of David and Christine Warnick of Rochester, New Hampshire, was inducted into the Cum Laude Society as a junior. He was accepted at Cornell, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and UNH (Honors) as well as Tufts University, where he will study engineering this fall.
During his four years at Berwick, Jeff maintained Honors or High Honors each quarter, earned an English Departmental Award and was inducted into the National French Honor Society as a sophomore. He also placed ninth, third, and tenth, respectively in the State of Maine National Language Contest for French Levels II, III, and IV. His extracurricular activities include Math Team, Robotics, Chess Club and the Big/Little Buddy Program. Jeff worked outside school and at BA's after-school program.
Jeff followed a rigorous course of study including AP computer science, AP physics, AP calculus, and AP French. In addition to his academic successes, Jeff was named the MVP of his New England Class D championship team this past fall. He was also named to the EIL All-star team and received All-New England recognition. He played basketball during his freshman and sophomore years but ultimately focused his attention on soccer, playing year round.
For his senior project, Jeff pursued his musical passion. Jeff's primary instrument is the guitar and he has performed in small bands since his freshman year, starting with a church group and now playing with schoolmates and friends. His project included assisting with Woofstock, Berwick's year-end musical venue, as well as writing and recording original music with fellow classmates.
