Away from the NXT Desk and at The 1st District Congressional debate
As we've discussed more than a few times before, I've been a man divided over the last few months. Circumstances have found me chasing politicians more than bacon news and as a result I've been splitting my time between the NXT Desk and the Political Affairs Desk.*
Well we're almost at the finish line, but first you guys can all do your civic duty by watching today's 1st District Congressional Debate and providing some questions by e-mail.

The Monday Fix: Mourning the Sox, cranking out votes and Palin Live
If today's Monday Fix seems a little TV-heavy it's because there was a lot of action on the flat screen this weekend. Sports, politics (I guess that's on TV all the time now) and dancing moose, this weekend had it all.

The Monday Fix: Wife Carrying, tech toys and The Late Show
My friends, I've been a bad, bad blogger, this I know. Last week was a hectic one here on the combined NXT/Political Affairs Desk. It's actually quite the messy desk at the moment. Last week I got tied up in election projects, including a few videos of the paper's endorsement interviews with Senate and Congressional candidates.
I'll try to make it up to you this week, I promise.

The Monday Fix: Coffee Brandy, Fey and Palin and Apple Rumors
The Monday fix was a bit of a necessity for me this morning, as I was off in Chicago over the weekend and in somewhat of a media blackout. No news, no blogs, not even a single Tweet for two days.
Actually, that was kind of nice, now that I think of it.

The Monday Fix: Debates, Twitter, Pandora and Maine.gov
For a while now I've been pondering some sort of Monday blog that looks at a few events or news that broke over the weekend. Sure, we'd all like to say we're just as plugged in on Saturday and Sunday as we are the rest of the week, but the fact is - weekends are for relaxin'.
So maybe The Monday Fix will become a permanent staple.

The Scanner: Kayne puppets, corn syrup and 'Suspending' the blog
In case you were wondering, Republican Presidential candidate McCain's campaign suspension has apparentlyset off a "suspension" fire on the Interwebs.
So in light of the situation, I am suspending the blog, but asking The Scanner to continue in my absence.

Rob Caldwell and John McCain - A match made in viral video heaven
Typically the only Mainers who get national exposure for their viral videos are the guys over at Eepybird.com whenever they roll out a wacky new experiment.
But over this last weekend, it wasn't a couple of guys in lab coats and some exploding Diet Coke - it was a local TV anchor and a presidential candidate.

Barack's blowin' up your cell phone ('Standard rates apply' edition)
By now most of the free world has gotten the word that Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama plans to announce his choice for vice president over text message and e-mail soon.
Aside from the gee-whiz (yesterday was neat-o, now it's gee-whiz. I can't explain it) and "shaking up tradition" factors, what does it really mean that a major party candidate for president is sending out major decisions the same way you make weekend plans with your friends?

Second Take: The view from the podium at the League Debate
It was shortly after I walked into the SPACE Gallery Wednesday night when Nat May, the gallery's executive director, asked me if I wanted a shot of whiskey.
Figuring for the night ahead - moderating the debate among the seven candidates running in the First District Congressional race, reading the questions, and speaking in front of a live studio audience - it seemed like it might be a good idea.
I've had my fair share of public speaking engagements over the years, starting with student council in high school and more recently in panel discussions on the press or journalism workshops for young writers.
But this is politics, and that means people's ideals, passions and futures are in the mix. For the candidates it's another opportunity to present themselves to the public, share their views and beliefs and distance themselves from their peers.
For the public it's part of the bigger process of taking
part in what our civics and history teachers often called "our civic duty."
And in the middle of it is just me, playing equal parts traffic cop and Bob Barker.

Keeping 'em honest - Debate Edition
About a month ago I got a call from the League of Young Voters looking for my help on something.
No stranger to the League, I gladly said I'd be happy to help in any way (as long as it did not conflict with my job, naturally.).
They wanted me to moderate a forum with the candidates running for Maine's First Congressional District seat.
I said, "Sure...I can do that."

Monday Morning Round–Up (So that happened part. II)
Was there something going on at Portland High School yesterday?
I drove past there and it looked like the entire city was trying to get in there.

Super Tuesday, Super Fun!
It's the biggest thing since the last biggest thing...which was probably the Super Bowl.
It's Super Tuesday and in states near and far from Maine primaries are taking place that will (in theory) determine who the presidential nominees are for the Democrats and the Republicans.
Lucky for you we here on the NXT desk have up–to–the–minute coverage of the campaigns that you likely won't find elsewhere.

It's Monday. You know it, I know it. I'm coming off a bitter doughnut/brunch experience yesterday that still has me rattled. Let's dispense with the pleasantries and just get on with this thing.

I snuck in (about as stealthily as a 6'3" man can) and caught the tail end of The League of Young Voter's local candidates debate last night over at the Community Television Network studios.

Politics and the Internets
No, I am not teaching a Poli Sci course - which is good for all of us.
If you'll recall a few weeks back there was a minor dust-up between Republican Sen. Susan Collins and Democratic Congressman Tom Allen, who is hoping to take her spot in the Senate next year.
