This morning I turned to a colleague and said, "Why is it that even when you know something is coming that you can still be surprised?"

Was I talking about:

a.) The Fate of the Boston Globe
b.) My post-screening feelings for "X-Men Origins: Wolverine"
c.) The comments on today's column

The answer, as always, is C.

So Facebook has flinched and is tweaking its new redesign.

Why did everyone see this coming? And more importantly, why did Facebook do it?

Typically the only Mainers who get national exposure for their viral videos are the guys over at Eepybird.com whenever they roll out a wacky new experiment.

But over this last weekend, it wasn't a couple of guys in lab coats and some exploding Diet Coke - it was a local TV anchor and a presidential candidate.

I think I'm pretty typical of people my age in that I've got an online presence that doesn't take too much digging to find. I'm on the usual collection of social networking sites - MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter among others.

And like most folks I hopped on the social networking train with the same general concept most people have - staying "connected."

But what does that really mean?

So a guy goes away for a couple of days and next thing you know his blog has turned into "Elvis was the king" grudge match.

This is why I can't leave you people alone. Luckily for you I learned lots of great stuff while away at the Knight Digital Media Center.
