Press Play with Videoport Jones - Bride Wars, Nothing But the Truth and Van Damme

We've got something unique in the new DVD releases pile this week - a movie about journalists! Oh, also, something involving Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway and a wedding dress catfight.

You can only guess how Videoport Jones feels about that.

The Scanner The hipster grifter, the Dork Yearbook and deep fried Cadbury Eggs

Also, deep fried Cadbury Creme Eggs. That's when Easter hurts.

Press Play with Videoport Jones - Slumdog Millionaire, Marley & Me and Seven Pounds

Press Play is a day late and I can assure you it's not an elaborate April Fool's joke. In fact, I can assure you this blog will be partaking in no April Fool's jokes. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but the Interwebs (where everything is already slightly less than trustworthy at times) has turned April 1 pranks into a deceptive and sophisticated art. I want no part of that.

ANYWAY, Videoport Jones is here as always to help sort out the good, the bad and the bizarre in this week's new DVD releases.

You know, when I first started up the Scanner a few years back, I really wasn't sure what to make of it. All I knew is I needed some place to collect and run down all the hilarious/awesome/bizarre/amazing stuff that pops up on the Internets.

There really is no other way to explain how Tom Brady's wife, a cover of Rush's "Limelight," Dr. Mario and more Facebook shame fit together.

Award season's in the rear view, but there are plenty of movies that'll never see a statuette of their own. The New Releases are on the shelves and Videooport Jones is here with a few thoughts.

Videoport Jones loves movies, America, and George Clooney

Tuesdays mean new DVDs are hitting the shelves of electronics stores and your local video store. (Since few people still use video, is that ever going to be changed? Local DVD store?)

Videoport Jones is in the building and has been thinking hard about this week's new releases.

New Releases with Videoport Jones

Week after week Hollywood continues to pump out its hits and misses on DVD in hopes of making new money, or making lost money back.

Fortunately for you Videoport Jones is always here to tell you what to buy, what to rent, and what to avoid and avoid hard.

Videoport Jones has something for that football hangover

Speaking of hangovers, I was up waaaay to late watching election coverage last night. I think I was memorized by CNN's giant iPod touch/interactive voting district map.

ANYWAY, since Super Tuesday pre-empted so many things, here's our weekly visit by Videoport Jones on this week's new DVD releases.

So that happened

There is nothing quite like the fear, tension and unease you feel when you're hosting a Super Bowl party and things go south for the home town team and you've got few fans for the opposing team in attendance.

I didn't know whether to hide the booze, knives and easily flammable furniture, or as a neutral party (Vikings Fan) appeal to reason.

Videoport Jones' favorite things

Tuesday's wealth of new DVD releases means there is plenty of praise and shame to heap on.

Lucky for me Videoport Jones, Videoport's chief strategist, film historian and quilter, is here to do some of the heavy lifting.

"The Ten," "The Invasion," "The King of California," and "The King of Kong." We've got a full boat today.

Men on Film - New DVDs with Videport Jones

I spent most of yesterday nursing a bottle of cough syrup and some Zicam, hence the absence in blog world. But fear not, because Videoport Jones never sleeps.
Well, he rarely sleeps. He's just that dedicated – some may say obsessed – with movies.

Here's this week's new releases.

Fistfull of New Releases with Videoport Jones

Mr. Jones got to run solo last week and no one got injured. I'd say that's a win–win.
But even I'm not lazy enough to take another day off and let him run wild for a consecutive week.

So I'm back, the second chair to Mr. Videoport Jones, and his picks of this week's new DVD releases.

Videoport Jones runs solo

Spending New Years with Prince, Brother Ali, Hüsker Dü and Adrian Petersen took a lot out of me. Combine that with the fact that Portland is getting more snowed in than Minneapolis, and I'll be out for a few more days. In the meantime, here's today's substitute teacher...Mr. Videoport Jones, doing what he loves the most, talking about this week's new releases on DVD.

Videoport Jones is this season's family hit

It's getting near that time when we've all got a some free time on our hands, right? What with all the shopping, the seasons greetings, the family, the sledding, the panic attacks. Right?

Need a break, or at the least a last minute gift? Videoport Jones is here with answers.

Videoport Jones gets Bourne and gets Lost...sort of

I have a feeling it is going to be another one of those high comment days. Last week we made a passing reference to J.J. Abram's "Lost," and lo and behold the Losties came out of the woodwork.

Well, wouldn't you know it, the third season has just been released on DVD.

I'll let Mr. Videoport Jones take it from here.

Tuesdays with Videoport Jones

I don't think Mitch Albom would have written a book about his regular visits with Videoport Jones.

Something tells me that would not have been quite the same heartwarming cross- generational tale as "Tuesdays with Morrie."

It may have gotten ugly. I'm guessing Jonsey and Mitch may not see eye to eye on movie choices.

Lucky for you Mr. Jones and I generally do agree.

Stuck with the family? Videoport Jones has a cure

Now that I think about it, Mr. Videoport Jones and I should have spent this time talking about Thanksgiving movies and Thanksgiving specials from days past ... except who makes Thanksgiving specials and movies anymore?

Instead, since we all know how much time you'll be spending with family and friends over the next few days – and you can only drink so much – Videoport Jones is here with a few new picks to slip into the DVD player.

You can thank him later.

The Animated Adventures of Videoport Jones

At the pace he's going Videoport Jones may alienate all other animation studios that aren't named Pixar. Still, I'm sure if anyone can make a kids movie about the life of a sarcastic, quick-witted film critic and video store employee, it's Pixar. Maybe they could make him a talking moose, with a belligerent groundhog who thinks he's a writer as a sidekick.

The New Release Shelf with Videoport Jones

You should all be happy Videoport Jones is with us today to talk about the week's new DVDs. I heard that following the Red Sox victory he went on a terrible bender.

Here at Press Herald Plaza we heard reports of a pants-less man in a Youkilis jersey running down Middle Street leading a pack in chants of "Viva Red Sox! Down with Joe Buck!"

Oh Jonsey, you irrepressible scamp.

New Releases with Videoport Jones

Let's just cut to the chase. You don't come here for the thoughtful, balanced and insightful commentary on modern cinema. You probably don't come for the free snacks, because we ran out of those too.

What we do have is generous doses of sarcasm and geek-think, and a few movies you may not have seen with some that you probably have.

It's time for New Release Tuesday with your old friend Videoport Jones!

"Shooting from the Hip" - Coming soon to DVD

It has all the makings of the perfect buddy cop flick, one's by the book, the other's a loose cannon. One is seeking redemption from a past he can't escape while the other is trying to save everything he holds dear.

They can't agree on much, other than when a movie's so bad it's not even "funny bad."

From the people who brought you "Meat Raffle," "Deceit on Sebago," and "Daddy Day Camp" - Videoport Jones and Justin Ellis are..."SHOOTING FROM THE HIP!"

Videoport Jones: Rise of the New DVDs

We're already a week into the new TV season, there are some winners, and soon to be losers (we can discuss that later). But like I said last week, you'll always have DVDs. And when the new releases fall, one man is there to help you sort the good stuff from the crap, or the laughable crap, or the so-bad-it's-good crap. And art flicks. And movies with "seasoned actresses."

I am of course talking about Videoport Jones.

Videoport Jones and the case of New DVD Tuesday

Sure the fall TV season is now upon us, not to mention the baseball playoffs, and we're still in the early stages of the NFL season.

But who needs that when you can buy (or rent) new DVDs?

Seriously, give the new TV season a few weeks ... you'll come back, trust us.

As always, no cynical look at the work of filmmakers would be complete without a Larry Bird-like assist from Videoport Jones!

Welcome back from the long weekend, campers. I know if there's one thing that will dull the pain of returning to school/work, it's new DVDs!

Or bacon cheese fries. Whichever you like.

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
