Special Guest: Patrick wonders about a Portland without people

The Commenter of the Week's been a great chance to showcase what other people are thinking and talking about, and luckily, the people who read this blog can type with reason and the caps lock off.

Which brings us to Patrick, our Commenter of the Week, who rightfully pointed out that International Talk Like A Pirate day is really eclipsing a more important holiday, "INTERNATIONAL CAPS LOCK DAY."

It's true.

But he also knocked one out of the park at the end of last week when he took notice of Mr. B. Nemitz's challenge to commenters on PressHerald.com.

Patrick's what you might call a reader, and he's been thinking about just what would happen to all the stuff (or some would say crap) we create, if we were no longer around...

Special Guest: Elsa says buy local, because you deserve it!

It was indeed another close race for the coveted Commenter of the Week title, all thanks to the heavy word-action after my mustache declaration.

In the end new commenter Elsa pulled away as the winner, largely on the strength of her Goulet love. She correctly pointed out that I neglected Mr. G in "The 'Stache is Right" poll, a sin that I will never live down.

But enough of that, let's listen to Elsa tell us why "Buy Local" isn't just another case of bumper sticker feel-goodery....

Special Guest: AC knows what Portland needs

It's another Friday, which means I get to kick back for a bit and let the readers do the work.
Though it's been a slow week, commenter AC came through in the end, largely due to her love of "Teen Wolf." And who among us would not wear a "Wolf Buddy" T-shirt?

Behold, AC, your Commenter of the Week, and she has a plan to make Portland just a little better...

Special Guest: Alex prepares for the waiting world

I think we might be onto something with this Commenter of the Week thing. In the second week we've now attracted more comments, more votes, and overall created a bigger community here at NXT. In short, it means you don't have to listen to me prattle on constantly.

It was a close contest, with the Canadian (Jonathan) nearly getting the title for the second week, but Alex pulled out the victory and is you Commenter of the Week.

Read his words and know the end of college is nigh...

Special Guest: Jonathan says the revolution will be digital

It's a big day here at NXT as our first Commenter of the Week gets to cut loose. Jonathan batted consistently this week and got on base most of the time. He's Canadian, so he may not get that reference.

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
