The Scanner: And now for something only slightly different

We've got more KG news, the first church of Tiger Woods, a Bruce Wayne sighting, rock, paper, scissors champs and bacon, bacon, bacon.

It's time for the Weekly Scanner.

The pink slip and the do-over

I wanted to save this one for The Scanner, but it was too bizarre to pass up.

How bad is the economy? How about "so bad it's strange."

In the world of journalism you could argue it's getting worse. Take the example of Brayden Simms of the Miami Herald.

He got laid off ... and then the paper said, "Not so fast, my friend!"

With great blogging, comes great respectability

I've found myself pondering lots of new media questions recently, especially after the bloggers vs. AP affair from last week.

Though that battle was over rights, preconditions, money and fear, one of the bigger questions that emerged was where bloggers get their content and how they (and the AP for that matter) fit into the "Age of New Media."

This week another dispatch has me wondering what's the end game for bloggers and what they write.

Press Play - New DVDs with Videoport Jones

Hold off on heading to the video store or your Netflix queue just yet, people. It's new DVD day, and that means it's time to break down the best and worst with Videoport Jones.

The re-return of Futurama, the antro-blunders of 10,000 B.C., an animated drama and a few thoughts on George Carlin.

It's us or them

We've been down this road many times, it seems. Every time it looks like we're clear, we end up overrun, outmanned and arguing.

And that, my friends, is no way to beat the zombies.

The Scanner: "Anything is possible"

With the Celt's grand scale thumping of the Lakers and the return of a championship to Boston (oh wait ... didn't Boston just win one last fall? Oh, it's been 17 years since an NBA title? I see...) it seemed fitting to use Kevin Garnett's* now infamous words along with today's Scanner.

Because it's true, on the Internet "anything is possible."

(* I'll spare you the long tortured Timberwolves fan talk about seeing KG win a title for another time...or if you run into me at a bar.)

Another case of why friends rock

There is probably only a short list of things more devastating than losing everything in a fire. That initial shock and fear from surviving a fire quickly fade into another awful reality - assessing what, if anything, you still have left.

In the case of Ryan Bubier and Kirsten Maki, the answer to that was not much.

This, of course, is where friends come in.

Crosslinks: Bloggers and the AP

Like a lot of bloggers I've been monitoring the recent spat between the Associated Press and bloggers over quoting AP news stories.

Bloggers quickly went into combat mode, claiming the AP had crossed the line in an age when so much content is free. The AP on the other hand says they have a right to protect their property and get paid.

Is it possible they're both right?

Press Play - New DVDs with Videoport Jones

One half of Tenacious D and one half of Blackstar? The return of David Duchovny. Matthew McConaghey and Kate Hudson, blond and as tanned as ever, ride again. A live-action "American Tail?"

It's time for this week's new releases on DVD, and Videoport Jones is here to give us the hits and misses.

SOUND OFF: The Ink Lovers

They live among us.
They may even look like us.
But when no one is looking, they gather together in the dark corners and subject each other to unspeakable horrors.

They are the tattooed.

The Weekend: A circus of the mind

Sorry for the lateness, boys and girls. It's been a busy day on the NXT Desk. We're also feeling a little sadness over the news that Tim Russert died. Also, R. Kelly was acquitted on his *ahem* charges.

To quote a friend: "I feel weird."

But fear not, we soldier on for you, dear reader. This weekend's got a bounty of fun, and did we mention some words of wisdom from Michael Cera?

The Scanner: Soon they'll come for your childhood

Time for a quick field trip across the interwebs. Seems this week there has been plenty of news about old 80s and 90s staples creeping back into the social fabric of today.

The Scanner: Where no one's childhood loves are safe.

Everywhere they want it to be

How many times do you remember hearing your parents, or someone else's parents say this phrase when you were younger:

"I wish I knew what was going on in that head of yours."

Or something like that.

It's possible the Telling Room and its growing army of young writers has an idea.

Beware the shrinking beer

Let us not mince words. The economy is making buying just about everything extremely painful. The prices of a gallon of gas and gallon of milk are frighteningly close.

If you've been checking out the series we're running this week you know Mainers are looking everywhere they can to cut corners.

But of all the places we've had to be vigilant against signs of the "Econolypse" - the pump, the grocery store - now we've got to add the bar to that list?

Press Play - New DVDs with Videoport Jones

Time for our weekly dose of film talk, minus the inflated egos and Hollywood puffery. (At least until we get E! knocking on our door.)

Videoport Jones stops by to talk about this week's new releases on DVD.

The Bucket List, Larry the Cable Guy and a brewer patriot? Yeah, that sounds about right.

SOUND OFF: Mac Mysteries and iPie Dreams

One of the more inescapable news stories today is Apple CEO Steve Jobs' speech at Apple's Word Wide Developers Conference today.

Apparently it's a widely held rumor that Jobs plans to announce a next generation iPhone today.

But what if he doesn't?

The Weekend: Polaroids, Honey Clouds and Swing 'em Home

We've reached the end of the line for yet another work week, and for that you should all be proud. Next week I swear things will get back to a normal pace here on the NXT Desk.

We just need to figure out what normal means.

In the meantime, let's run down this weekend's options and take a trip to the links!

Red Auerbach and the flopping menace

Any observer of this blog knows that from time to time we'll take a few diversions into sports, because, well, just because we can.

In this case with the Celtics about to square off against the Lakers in the NBA Finals for the first time in over 20 years (I was seven the last time they clashed) it seemed fitting to offer up some video love.

Here's Celtics legend and championship architect Red Auerbach taking on one of the biggest threats to the NBA: Flopping. That's right, even back in the 1970s flopping began to rear its ugly head, even before European players came to the shores of the U.S. in large numbers.

Not only is this educational, but if the classic NBA unis (when men wore short shorts with pride) aren't worth a little entertainment, then you have no soul.

Red breaks down just what is a foul, and what's not, and has a few words for all you would be floppers out there. You know who you are.

The Scanner: Where we'll never suspend our campaign

Hey everybody! The bloggins have been a little light this week since the NXT Desk is working on some projects and other top-secret unlisted projects. Fear not, things will be back on course soon enough.

But for now take comfort in The Scanner: All the unfiltered goodness the Interwebs provides.

It wouldn't be Tuesday without a visit from resident filmologist Videoport Jones.

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
