Prank it up
The only rule is...no one gets hurt. Also, Adams has to be home by 11 p.m. or his mom will be worried. Oh, and no more than seven people can fit in my car. But other than that, anything goes.
Let's talk about pranks.

What was that? ('Stache Pag Edition)
A lot of things on the docket today down here at the NXT Desk, most notably pranks and other shenanigans. But we'll get to that much later.
First, a parting glance at the moustaches of March.

Second Take: The view from the podium at the League Debate
It was shortly after I walked into the SPACE Gallery Wednesday night when Nat May, the gallery's executive director, asked me if I wanted a shot of whiskey.
Figuring for the night ahead - moderating the debate among the seven candidates running in the First District Congressional race, reading the questions, and speaking in front of a live studio audience - it seemed like it might be a good idea.
I've had my fair share of public speaking engagements over the years, starting with student council in high school and more recently in panel discussions on the press or journalism workshops for young writers.
But this is politics, and that means people's ideals, passions and futures are in the mix. For the candidates it's another opportunity to present themselves to the public, share their views and beliefs and distance themselves from their peers.
For the public it's part of the bigger process of taking
part in what our civics and history teachers often called "our civic duty."
And in the middle of it is just me, playing equal parts traffic cop and Bob Barker.

The Scanner: An excuse to spend time on the Interwebs
It's time for another weekly installment of The Scanner, otherwise known as "The NXT Desk goofs off and looks up random stuff on the web instead of writing something better."

Sweet Sixteen Bracket-stravaganza Update
Coming to you live from the NXT College Basketball Studios here at Press Herald Plaza, I'm Justin Ellis here with analysts former Duke standout Christian Laettner and frequent "where are they now" question God Shammgod, of Providence College to take a look at the Hoops Challenge standings going into this week's round of NCAA games.

Keeping 'em honest - Debate Edition
About a month ago I got a call from the League of Young Voters looking for my help on something.
No stranger to the League, I gladly said I'd be happy to help in any way (as long as it did not conflict with my job, naturally.).
They wanted me to moderate a forum with the candidates running for Maine's First Congressional District seat.
I said, "Sure...I can do that."

The Mist, The War and more new DVDs with Videoport Jones
The post-Easter rush of new DVDs is on ... and sadly none of them have a chocolate center.
Film expert and resident smart pants Videoport Jones is on duty to talk about the new hits and misses.

Chasing The Young Reader
At one point or another in most jobs, you ask yourself fundamental questions like "am I happy?" "am I making a difference?" or "I wonder if this rash is cause for a sick day."
As the "youth culture" columnist I've often wondered when I'll age out of the job. (We'll settle that one in a few weeks when I turn 28.) But at the rate things are going in the industry, it may be better to ask if the "youth culture" is actually reading the paper.

"A new generation of alcohol tester"
Remember how I said weird things come across the NXT Desk from time to time? Take the case of the BACtrack personal Breathalyzer – just in time for the St. Paddy's season.

The Weekend: Birthdays, anniversaries and breakdancing
Another week in the rear view, and I feel like we're all a bit better for it. We're on the verge of one of those pseudo-holiday weekends, since St. Pat's is on Monday. Exercise caution...or not. It's really your call. Just don't look for any sympathy when you're found cold, naked, muttering and green in the Alley of Shame Sunday morning.

The Scanner: Doughnuts, Zombies, The Hulk and Ping Pong
We stay busy here on the NXT Desk, delivering you the news you (hopefully) haven't found elsewhere and (hopefully) will make your day a little funnier, brighter and all-righter.
(Sorry, I think I just had a McConaughey moment. It happens)

Bracket Busters and the NXT Hoops Challenge
We cover a lot of ground on the NXT Desk, from pop culture and technology to local art, music, politics, cuisine, personal grooming, relationship advice...the list goes on. So far I don't think we've gotten to auto repair.
But today we're adding something new: sports.

Flash that 'Stache
March is a time of year known for many things, chief among them is college basketball. (We'll get to that later, but needless to say, start thinking about your bracket)
There's St. Patrick's Day, and oh yes, you better believe we'll be covering that too.
And let's not forget the Ides of March.
But no, none of these is the point today. March is for Mustaches.

New Podcast: Talking with Justin Alfond
Turn your dial to NXT radio, where we promise none of the hits, none of the commercials, none of the giveaways...actually, what do we promise again?
Oh, right, interviews.
This week we've got Justin Alfond, former state director for the League of Young Voters.

The Weekend: One Big Night
Ever have one of those weekends where there's so much going on that you almost have to plot out how you are going to hit everything like a military campaign?
"By 1800 hours we take the Four Walls Gallery, by 1945 hours we'll need to have seats at Local 188. If we haven't established a beachhead at SPACE by 2100, all will be lost."
It's something like that this weekend.

Winners and Losers in High Def
Since DVD was effectively snuffed out of existence (by its own maker, how tragic), there are questions that need answering.
Most importantly – if you completely bought in to one format or another, were you setting yourself up for a fall?

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove
it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine
Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the
Monday Magazine.
If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture,"
covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college
debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music
scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa
Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.
Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of
Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer,
redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life
would sound like.
When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain
America.
Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and
what they do.
