Videoport Jones' favorite things

Tuesday's wealth of new DVD releases means there is plenty of praise and shame to heap on.

Lucky for me Videoport Jones, Videoport's chief strategist, film historian and quilter, is here to do some of the heavy lifting.

"The Ten," "The Invasion," "The King of California," and "The King of Kong." We've got a full boat today.

Monday Morning Round–Up

It's Monday. You know it, I know it. I'm coming off a bitter doughnut/brunch experience yesterday that still has me rattled. Let's dispense with the pleasantries and just get on with this thing.

The Weekend – Football Free Possibilties

Feels funny doesn't it, no hype machine spinning out of control for a big game this weekend? No college football, no NFL playoffs. It's nice isn't it, kinda of relaxing, right?

Enjoy it because by this time next weekend when we're up to our eyeballs in coverage, analysts, studio hosts and beer commercials you'll want an escape.

The Scanner: Where no one cares if we're in a walking cast

Oh we're back and getting better every day here on the NXT desk. A quick note for those of you who have asked and those that are just observant – the podcast is not dead, it's just on a short hiatus. With the holiday and some scheduling things we've been off the rails for a bit here. We'll be back up next week.

And with that, let's get into the good stuff: bacon, fast cars, paintball and "Fight Club" the musical.

Men on Film - New DVDs with Videport Jones

I spent most of yesterday nursing a bottle of cough syrup and some Zicam, hence the absence in blog world. But fear not, because Videoport Jones never sleeps.
Well, he rarely sleeps. He's just that dedicated – some may say obsessed – with movies.

Here's this week's new releases.

The Fever

Consequences have actions, even the ones we don’t think about. If you take the “butterfly effect” as fact and apply it outside of science and bad Aston Kutcher films, almost anything we do must have some unintended aftermath, right?

Band Aides
"For instance, are you willing to make the commitment to wakin' up at the crack a' noon, for deep-knee rock squats!? Seven or eight at a time!? In a row? How 'bout are you willing to make the commitment to rock-hard tasty abs washer-board style? Glistening in the sun. How 'bout are you willin' to make the commitment, wakin' up, goin' "Okay, it's gig time, what T–shirt am I gonna wear?" Can't decide...can't decide...brain aneurysm!"

Dragons, Dane Cook, cupcakes and Videoport Jones

The weather...well, we won't get into that. But let's just say it's the perfect time to catch up on a few movies.

Lucky for you Videport Jones stops by each week to talk about new releases.

Stock up.

Let the Debate Begin

If only it was politics.
The debate I am talking about is not as far–reaching, but could be just as divisive.

I'm talking about Old Port vs. Congress Street.

The Weekend: Arm yourselves

Zombies. Freakin' zombies.

I cannot stress this enough. There will be actual zombies on the streets of Portland this weekend.

Not since the Kickball Affair has the city been in this much danger.
I've said it before and I'll say it again until people heed my words...if you need me, I'll be holed up at Rosie's with a shotgun.

The Scanner: CES edition

Since I'm the closest thing to a "technology" reporter for this fair establishment, I'm setting aside the pop culture in this week's Scanner in favor of more gadgets, toys and expensive high–tech goodness.

Why, you may ask?

CES.

Fear and Groaning in Portland

Usually when people march it's for a cause, right? Some injustice or struggle that has sparked the masses to leave their seats and take to the streets.

Fistfull of New Releases with Videoport Jones

Mr. Jones got to run solo last week and no one got injured. I'd say that's a win–win.
But even I'm not lazy enough to take another day off and let him run wild for a consecutive week.

So I'm back, the second chair to Mr. Videoport Jones, and his picks of this week's new DVD releases.

Videoport Jones runs solo

Spending New Years with Prince, Brother Ali, Hüsker Dü and Adrian Petersen took a lot out of me. Combine that with the fact that Portland is getting more snowed in than Minneapolis, and I'll be out for a few more days. In the meantime, here's today's substitute teacher...Mr. Videoport Jones, doing what he loves the most, talking about this week's new releases on DVD.

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
