Rain, beats, bikes and living life

I gotta say, I’m surprised by you people. I offered up a whole blog-ful o’ sex yesterday, and not one single comment?

What is this world coming to when a man tries to get some provocative discussion going and no one says a word? Teenagers! Sex! Blog!

Savin' it

We’re talking about the big S (and I suppose the big E and the big X) today, which is a topic that always grabs people’s attention. That counts double when you combine the words “sex” and “teens.”

Electioneering

We’re getting into the final hours of a very brutal campaign season, and it’s becoming clear that every vote is going to count.

No I’m not talking about the 2008 presidential campaign, but instead the Phoenix’s annual Best Music Poll.

Final Assessment

I don't know if I've ever spent as much time at the Station or Space as I did over last weekend. But in the final assessment, I (and I suspect a lot of other people) would say it was worth it.

Virginia Tech and new media

In trying to write today’s column about the tragedy at Virginia Tech, the natural inclination would have been to get reactions from students here about fears of something of that magnitude happening in Maine.

The Scope of Things

I think Talib Kweli was on the front page of the newspaper this morning, but it looks like he fell into Photoshop along the way.

There’s also a non-Monday column sighting too, summing up the shows hitting town this weekend.

This blog is brought to you by the letter R

There's no overall theme for today’s round up, but you can decide. The categories are: graffiti, the exploding Mentos guys, bizarre attempts at prison cuisine and a rather large man’s attempt at running the Boston Marathon. Buzzers ready.

Pirates of the Interweb

Attention music-stealing college students: Find another way to get your fix.

Why? Because the recording industry has plenty of lawyers, and they intend to use them.

Housekeeping and other nuisances

For all my MegaStorm 2007 jokes, guess who ended up manning the phones and chasing power outages yesterday. Sadly, I did not get access to anything with the word Doppler in it.

I don't need no instructions to know how to rock

If we all manage to pry ourselves away from Deathstorm 2007 coverage, there’s a whole mess of things to get into this weekend. As always, this is not a definitive list, but a few choice selections, like a Monster's of Rock CD.

Quarter-life meltdown

It’s that special time in a young man’s life, when he can look back and reflect on what direction his choices have led him, or at least, count on people to buy him free drinks. Or cake. Cake is good.

Up for the cause

You know what’s funny, making jokes about it snowing in April. Really, that does not get on people’s nerves when it’s snowing…in…April.
All the same, it’s likely to be spring at some point, so let’s just move on.

Midweek round-up

Gotta make a few quick hits today, busy getting together next week’s column.
It’s spring, and that means, well, several things. But on top of the list next to graduation is the job search.

The man who made Kool-Aid say, 'Oh yeah'

Talib Kweli is coming to Portland.
It was just announced that Kweli will be doing an all-ages show with DJ Jon at the Station on Saturday, April 21.
Read that to yourself again.

Who’s avenging the what now?

I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that part of what got me after today's column was the name of the group. "The Vestigial Avengers" has a classy-yet-two-fisted-justice kind of sound to it.
The thing is, the name just barely made it into the column.

So close to quittin' time

And we're back, coming to you live from Press Herald Plaza. Though snow (and blackouts) threatened to bury this weekend, the adventures to be had are many.

The Blunt Youth Radio crew is trying to get to New York City this spring, and they need the cash to do it. How? Hair.

I'm your friend, I'm not like the others

Hello friends, welcome to the tea party.

I've been writing the "youth" column for over 3 years and someone thought, "Hey! Let's do it on the Internets!" Add some fancy graphics, a sense of ego, a glamour shot and you have what you read before you.

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
