The Weekend: Record Store Day, All The Real Girls and Flutter

This weekend it's really simple: go see some live music.
There's pretty much something on tap for just about everyone over the next few days, including CD releases, hip-hop showcases, and oh yeah, Record Store Day.

FRIDAY

  • Dominic and the Lucid is playing Empire tonight along with the curious newcomers, Isobel, who popped up on the scene with their own unique sound (kinda rock, kinda ethereal) and are on course for a CD sometimes soon. Check out tonight's show, which also features Brooklyn's Akudama starting at 9 p.m. It's $7.

  • Setting off on a new tour - Brzowski & Graymatter are marking the occasion at Geno's tonight. The appropriately named "After the Thaw" tour will take Brzo up and down the Northeast and parts of Canada. But tonight you can see him with Sandbag, ReCall and Agent 8 starting at 10 p.m. It's a $6 entry.

  • Brace yourself for a night packed with local hip-hop at the CD-release for Abbatoir, including DJ Shade, LabSeven, Luch and Eliza, Mike Blast, Mike Clouds and A-Frame. Sound packed enough? At the Big Easy, starting at 9 p.m. It's $7.

SATURDAY

  • Today is Record Store Day, which means it's a great time to go out and hear some music. Around the state there are plenty of stores taking part, but locally you can head to Bull Moose in Portland to hear Disturbed and This Way. At Newbury Comics you can hear Lady Lamb and the Beekeeper, Brenda, Ghosthunter, Confusatron and sets from H++L. Don't forget to check out this week's podcast, a discussion with Bob Wirtz, owner of Enterprise Records. For more info on shows and giveaways, head to RecordStoreDay.com.

  • All the Real Girls are not just throwing a CD release party at Empire tonight, but they plan to run down the entirety of their debut release, My Friends Are Going to Be Strangers. That's right, the whole thing. If you ever were curious or wanted to get a taste of what they're all about, tonight should definitely be the night. Along for the assist are Holy Boys Danger Club and Guitar Bomb.

  • Soulive returns! Back again at the Asylum tonight with Portland's Duke of Soul, Nigel Hall at the Asylum starting at 9 p.m. $18 in advance $20 at the door

Finally, the weekend video looks at the next innovation in Nano Blogging. That's right, Twitter, Micro Blogging is about to be done.

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
