Shirt Party - Meet Local Ink Tonight

Some times I wonder if this city loves locally made T-shirts as much as its local bands. The latest example? Local Ink.

Portland's newest designer T-shirt outfit is throwing their coming out bash tonight at Port City Music Hall to introduce themselves and their spring line.

Following in the footsteps of so many other companies in the area, Local Ink's looking to local artists and designers to create art for the shirts. The debut artists are Theodore Bettcher and Tessa O'Brien presenting "The Originals," Local Ink's first line of shirts.

Local Ink founder Mark Ohlson's approach to the T-shirt is less utility and more art that goes everywhere you go.

Portland is no stranger to apparel companies that are taking a new look at T-shirts, with Pinecone & Chickadee and Small Victory Studios among the new crop.

It's no secret that I'm a T-shirt fanatic (Threadless has been the recipient of a chunk of my PPH earnings) so I'll be keeping an eye on Local Ink's efforts with great interest.

Stop by the the shindig begining at 6 p.m. for a chance to meet the artists and enjoy cocktails, a champagne toast and music from DJ's Shade and Graymatter.

Their t-shirts are listed at $80 - $92 on their site. Man, those shirts better freaking wash and fold themselves at that price. Dang, son.

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
