The Weekend: Dinosaur Jr., Wale and 'The Dirty Garage'
Since things have been so fluid on the NXT Desk this week, I thought I'd shift the Weekend Blog into Express mode. All the highlights, all the frills, none of the stuff you don't want (annoying commercials, excess fat, pledge drives...). So let's see what's on the radar for this weekend.
FRIDAY
The big news this weekend? Dinosaur freaking Jr. is playing in town! Oh you remember Dinosaur Jr., right? They occupied that same space in your ear that Sonic Youth held back in the 90s, when you found out rock didn't have to involve spandex and long hair. They've had ups, downs and disbanded. But they are back and apparently releasing a new album in June. They play The Station tonight with Awesome Color. It's an all-ages show and starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $21 in advance and $23 at the door. Over at Geno's it's a sweet deal of an evening, with Confusatron supplying the music and Ricky Boy Floyd providing the comedy. Also you get a sneak peak of the new band Book of the Dead. Show starts at 9 p.m. And for the evening's taste of turntables, Mayonnaise and Thel are spinning records at the White Heart starting at 9 p.m. As always, it's free.
SATURDAY
Not only did Wale ape "Seinfield" viciously and hilariously in "The Mixtape About Nothing," (sampling Jerry, Elaine, George and Kramer...oh Kramer), he's back with another effort that involves features vocal darling Lady Gaga. So that's bound to catch some ears and make its way into the club. You can catch it all tonight as Wale swings through Portland on part of his tour. He's playing the Asylum tonight with support from UCB starting at 9 p.m. It's $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Down at Empire Dine & DanceLoverless has lined up a few friends for a showcase, including Johnny Cremains, Shawn Saindon, Adam Kurtz and Keith mann. Show's at 9 p.m. and it's $5. If you're in the market for another all-ages show this weekend, the Meg Perry Center is holding one of its regular benefit shows to sponsor programs. The line-up tonight includes Over a Cardboard Sea, Wood Spider and Dos Eckies. It's a suggested donation up to $10 and the show begins at 8 p.m.
Finally, here's your weekend video. Imagine just about every "indie movie" you've ever seen, and then the trailers for those films. Yeah? Then this should be plenty funny. Hat tip to Mary (and her nut house) for the find.
Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove
it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine
Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the
Monday Magazine.
If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture,"
covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college
debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music
scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa
Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.
Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of
Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer,
redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life
would sound like.
When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain
America.
Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and
what they do.
