New Podcast: The Roundtable talks debt, jobs and topless coffee shops

Where else but the NXT Podcast would you get a discussion on the economy, jobs, winter festivals and topless doughnut shops?

The guests in this episode of the NXT Roundtable are Elise Loschiavo, events coordinator for the Portland Downtown District, Christian McNeil, communications director & blogger for GrowSmart Maine, and Harris Parnell, state director for the Maine League of Young Voters.

You can download or listen to the podcast in the player on the right, or head to iTunes.

While everyone is talking about the economy these days, we looked specifically at which is more scary for young people today: the looming national debt that our generation will have to pay off, or the threat of not finding a job today.

In this episode we also discussed the recent increase in winter festival in Portland and what that means to the community, and finally, why did Maine get so popular thanks to a small town topless coffee shop?

A programming note: If some of the discussion seems a little past-tense, it's because the roundtable took place a few weeks ago. I got sidetracked thanks to a few other projects (and an unexpected trip to Austin, TX) and wasn't able to get it up in time.

Music in the show was provided by Hiss & Chambers, and remember, if you're in a band, know of a band or have a suggestion for music in the show. Contact me! That goes double for show ideas and guest recommendations.

And don't forget - we're not entirely wedded to the name "NXT Roundtable." It's a little too stiff and formal sounding for a show like this. If you've got an idea please send it my way. All the credit and thanks will be yours!

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
