The Weekend: Geno's at 26, Digable Planets cancels and the Twoble with Twitter
How am I going to spend my weekend? More than likely dedicating more hours to a TV somewhere watching college basketball. Especially since Mizzou keeps advancing. But for everyone else, there's plenty of action...minus that Digable Planets show. Looks like that's dead. But I do have some details...
FRIDAY
Mark this anniversary: 26 years of rock at Geno's. From Brown Street to Congress, gallons of PBR and countless bands (and fans) served, Geno's has survived it all. Come down and celebrate some living history tonight with Hatchetface and the Vipers, Sun Gods in Exile and, ladies and gentlemen, the one and only Pontiffs. Show starts at 9:30 p.m.
Don't let it ever be said that Portland's music scene does not have a big, big heart. For two nights starting tonight at the Big Easy more than a dozen groups are playing a benefit to help the children of Karey Moreau. The 38-year-old mother of Mya and Emma Daniels passed away from lupus earlier this year. The proceeds from the two nights shows will go directly to the family. The line-up includes Sly Chi, Gypsy Tailwind, Hoboe, Kenya Hall, Paranoid Social Club, Tony McNaboe, Spose, Red Cross Sky, and Stationeightyfive. It's a $10 donation and the show starts at 6:30 tonight and Saturday.
Let's make it clear: Digable Planets...is not coming to town. (I know, I'm just as upset as you.) The bugs from beyond and purveyors of cool were scheduled to play at the Asylum tonight with Common Market and local crew LabSeven. But according to multiple sources the tour has been canceled. Apparently the group is having some conflicts and is breaking up again. Contact the Asylum for details on tickets, refunds, etc.
It's an anniversary kind of weekend around town. Tonight The White Heart celebrates its 3rd birthday, complete with drink specials and...appetizers from 5 - 7! Music for the night comes courtesy of DJ Graymatter and the WePushButtons.com crew.
Finally, our weekend video comes courtesy of Current TV's Super News, and gets to the bottom of the Twitter phenomenon. Beware the fail whale. The Twouble with Twitter indeed...
Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove
it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine
Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the
Monday Magazine.
If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture,"
covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college
debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music
scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa
Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.
Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of
Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer,
redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life
would sound like.
When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain
America.
Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and
what they do.
