So here's the Weekend Blog - Express version. But don't worry, it's worth it. (It's got some Jon Hamm.)
FRIDAY
Over at Port City Music HallOK GO is bringing their brand of pop to the masses, and one has to wonder if they're bringing their treadmills with them. Also onboard for the 8 p.m. show are Longwave and Oppenheimer. It's $16 in advance, $18 at the door. Over at the Big Easy champions of rock Highway Jackson is celebrating the CD release for their newest effort, The Dirty Bar Campaign. (Sounds like a campaign we can all get down with.) For more Highway Jackson, make sure to check out lead singer Kris Roger's Twitter feed. On the assist tonight is Sidecar Radio for the show starting at 8 p.m. If you make your way over to SPACE tonight you can get another shot at Lady Lamb the Beekeeper, who was at Tower of Song last weekend. Tonight Lady Lamb is opening for Sister Suvi and Shapes and Sizes. Show starts at 9:30 p.m. it's a $6 entry.
SATURDAY
Time for another annual tradition over at Bubba's Sulky Lounge tonight. St. Paddy's day is around the corner and theMaine Roller Derby is gearing up for a new season. Oh...the shenanigans. It's the Lucky Lass Throwdown, with DJ Rocket.one on the turntables. Look for leg wrestling and human musical chairs. I'd wear pads if I were you. Starts at 9 p.m. and it's $5. Those funk wonders out of Brooklyn, Chin Chin, are returning to Maine and playing the Asylum at 9 p.m. The Pimps of Joytime are along for the fun. It's $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Continuing on the same base line, if you hit up Empire Dine & Dance you can take in the 13-piece funk magic (featuring the likes of Nigel Hall and Ryan Zoidis) that is A Murder of Crows at Empire at 9 p.m.
Finally, here's something that has made me laugh to the point of tears several times this week. The weekend video needs no explaining, probably because it set the internets on fire this week. (Though not as much as the Jon Stewart/Jim Cramer bloodfeud) When you're an evil billionaire hell-bent on destroying Metropolis' most-loved hero...yes, sometimes even you need a bailout. Jon Hamm stars. (If this guy can sing and dance...it's over, people. He'd be the equivalent of a 5 tool player.)
Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove
it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine
Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the
Monday Magazine.
If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture,"
covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college
debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music
scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa
Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.
Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of
Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer,
redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life
would sound like.
When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain
America.
Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and
what they do.
