Monday Morning Fix: Giant lobster rolls, finding Atlantis and bye to Conan
Since the weather and the Oscars seemed to dominate the news this weekend (I didn't really pay much attention to either), let's run down some of the things you may have missed in the last 72 hours.
ITEM 1: The Biggest Lobster Roll & missing poles
First, Maine wants to grab a new place in the history books on the strength of its lobster rolls. That's right, the West End Neighborhood Association wants to build the world's largest lobster roll this summer. They've already called and put the Guinness people on notice. How long until the world's largest whoopie pie? Can we get on that too?
In other odd news, if you live up in Central Maine you may already know that telephone poles have gone missing. Yes, telephone poles. Police say the thefts began last fall and appeared to have stopped. But the bandits have returned. Best guess on what you could use 35 telephone poles for? Anyone?
ITEM 2: Google covers up discovery of 'Atlantis?'
For a moment it really did seem like Google could do everything, after a rumor circulated online that the lost city of Atlantis was discovered thanks to Google Earth. The city of the ancients apparently can be seen off the coast of Africa in the latest update to the mapping program. Google has of course denied the discovery, saying the imageis the result of the data mapping process. So the lost city is a glitch? Sounds suspect. The Times of London offers a primer on the lost city, for those who may not remember its disappearance more than 2,000 years ago.
ITEM 3: Farewell to Conan
In Case You Missed It: Unless you were buried under a snowbank and without power (which is completely plausible in Maine right now), you may have heard that Conan O'Brien is leaving Late Night and New York City to take on The Tonight Show in L.A. This would have been a bigger splash if not for the news that Jay Leno is sticking around town in a new show for NBC, an hour before The Tonight Show. (Also, just to complete the musical chairs, Jimmy Fallon is taking over as host of Late Night) ANYWAY, last Friday was Conan's final show, and by most accounts it was a great one. The final show featured The White Stripes, John Mayer, Will Ferrell and the return of former sidekick, Andy Richter. If you're like me and missed the final show, no worries because you can watch it online. Also, if you're like me, you're probably hoping he doesn't change his formula too much in L.A. MTV News suggests five sketches Conan should bring out to The Tonight Show. Conan's departure (or move, if you want to be fair), is something of a cultural touchstone, and The A.V. Club looks back wistfully at what made Conan great.
