The Weekend: The Lomax, The 48 Hour Music Festival & 'The Uncler'
Never, ever forget that holiday weekends have two benefits: You get an extra day off, and the weekend comes a lot sooner.
A classic hip-hop battle, a Portland music jumble and the rise and fall (and rise?) of America with Alyssa Milano and a skinny guy in a rented star-spangled hat? It's all possible this weekend.
FRIDAY
The Big Easy continues its Clash of the Titans series tonight, which pits local musicians against each other as stand-ins for all-time-greats. On the title card tonight: Public Enemy vs. Cyprus Hill. Is this really a fair fight? I feel it's not. To catch the beats and breaks head over at 9 p.m. It's a $5 ticket.
The Lomax have a familiar and unique sound, a bit country, a bit pop. On iTunes they'd probably fall under Americana or something.Tonight the gentlemen in The Lomax are celebrating an album release (for the appropriately titled "The Lomax Album") at Empire Dine. Along for the fun are the might and power ofKing Memphis. Fun starts at 9 p.m. It's a $5 entry.
Just up Congress The Pubcrawlers, The Have Nots and The Murder Weaponare probably going to carve up Geno's tonight. I feel like Geno's needs a slogan like "If it's the weekend, it's hard (bleep) rock at Geno's." Or "Rock, it's what we do, and we do it well: Geno's." something like that. Pretty reliable source of metal, punk, and general heavy rock. Show starts at 9 p.m.
SATURDAY
So here's an interesting experiment. On Thursday night about 30 people from different bands around Portland (including, but not limited to, Fire on Fire, Sidecar Radio, Confusatron, and Loverless) got together...and then got jumbled up. They've got exactly two days to put together 25 minutes worth of material. We already know there is an insane amount of collaboration going on in this town, but can it be done in 48 hours? I'd say the price of admission is worth it, not just to see how they sound, but if they're actually able to do it. Buckle up. SPACE Gallery's 48 Hour Music Festival starts at 9 p.m. and it's $10 to get in.
Hometown favorite and stalwart songstress of local musicDarien Brahms is playing a free show tonight! And it gets better: It's All Ages! at North Star. All ages, free! Singer-songwriter Sean Hasey is 8 p.m.
And because it's the weekend and I can't leave out a DJ,j.hjort is at the White Heart tonight starting at 9 p.m. As always it's free.
Finally, here's the weekend video, and it's oddly topical. What do you get if you spoof an Oscar-nominated movie about a down-on-his-luck wrestler and combine that with a tale of a down-on-its-luck economy and/or country? You get "The Uncler," apparently. Make your own conclusions.

it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine
Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the
Monday Magazine.
If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture,"
covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college
debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music
scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa
Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.
Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of
Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer,
redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life
would sound like.
When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain
America.
Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and
what they do.
