The Weekend: Love, funk, rock and hate on Valentine's Weekend
Putting Valentine's Day on a weekend...on a three-day weekend? Oh. Wow.
It's best to prepare yourself for some sweet, angry and funky invitations over the next few days.
Also, do yourself a favor and skip the Roses. If everyone's buying them, they're not special anymore.
Get Valentine's Day weekend off to a good start by dressing up and heading over to the Anti Valentine's Ball, or Heartbreak Horror at The Asylum Friday night. Gothic Maine's semi-formal affair to remember encourages "semi-bloodthirsty" attire and tales of tragedy as prizes for the worst break-up story. The ball begins at 9 p.m. and it's free before 9:30 p.m. The cover is $4 afterwards. (FRI)
Maine Roller Derby is bringing back the hate for all the lovers for another year. "Hate The Love" returns to the Big Easy for another year as the roller derby promises more anti-valentines cards, hate letters, break-up rants and more rage against romance. The derby's new season is coming up soon so they'll have a raffle for season passes as well. All of this and the a highly danceable soundtrack courtesy of DJ rocket.one. Show starts at 9 p.m. and it's $5 to get through the door.
If you're looking to hear the classic Donny Hathaway/Roberta Flack "Where is the Love," chances are you could find it at SPACE Saturday night. But don't get stuck on the sweet soul music, because something tells me DJ's Pore and Boondocks (AKA docks79) are going to dig deep for the show entitled "Heartbreaks and Crates." Slow jams, dance party music and plenty of "you shouldn't have left me" jams. Also, there's a costume contest, so come prepared. Show starts at 9 p.m., it's a $6 entry.
DJ Jon takes a step back from Duran Duran and WHAM and pushes the wayback machine down another decade to the 70s for "The Fever" at Bubbas at 9 p.m Saturday. Think Travolta at his height, decked out in a white suit with nothing to stop him. Expect Sister Sledge, Sly and the Family, The Bee Gees ('natch) and so much more. In case you want to get a little more mileage out of your 70s outfit, it's a free entry to The Fever in costume. Period costume. Prizes for the best. For everyone else not in bellbottoms, it's $5.
Not to be outdone on the night for lovers, Geno's is presenting its own Valentine's Day extravaganza Saturday with "St. ValenDoom's Night." If slow jams and ballads aren't what you had in mind, perhaps this will suit your needs. Hatchetface and The Vipers, Ogre, " target="_blank">Pigboat and Arcane Lore are rallying for those those more metal inclined. Doors open at 9 p.m.(SAT)
Finally, I thought we should send things off for the weekend on a sexy note for all the lovers. So of course I thought of the Flight of the Conchords. They have a message for all the Ladies of the World.

Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the
Monday Magazine.
If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture,"
covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college
debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music
scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa
Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer,
redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life
would sound like.
When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain
America.
Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and
what they do.
