Monday Morning Fix: Fairpoint Scams, text crimes and Collins in the spotlight
Let's take a look at what you may have missed over the last 72 hours around Maine and across the country. And no, we will not be discussing The Grammys. Sorry, I just can't do it, people.
The FairPoint Saga Continues: Now with Scams!
If anyone muttered the words "Well, at least things can't get worse," talking about the Verizon to FairPoint e-mail conversion...you ruined it for everyone. While FairPoint is still trying to apologize for the delay in the e-mail switch over and general screw-upery now comes news that a FairPoint e-mail scam is making the rounds and snatching people's personal info.
At this rate can FairPoint do anything right?
Busted: Text Crimes
Remember last month I wrote about how the State Legislature was looking into creating laws against text messaging while driving?Lawmakers picked up a little more ammo in that fight as the State Police revealed a 16-year-old girl caused a minor accident texting while driving last year. The girl had originally said she dozed off. The result's the same: her license has been suspended.
D.C.'s "That Girl" - Sen. Collins?
In case you were trapped in a cave or just without Internet thanks to Fairpoint over the weekend, Maine's own Republican Sen. Susan Collins has been popping up everywhere in all the talks over the passage of President Obama's economic stimulus plan. Collins and Maine's other Republican senator, Olympia Snowe, are seen as the moderates in the middle (I smell a sitcom) of the negotiations to push the stimulus package through the Senate. Just this morning Collins was on The Today Show with her ally in amendments, Nebraska's Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson. Thanks to a handy Google News search you can see some of what Collins has been saying about the stimulus bill. Some are saying Collins deserves praise for being bipartisan, while others say Collins (and Snowe) have turned their back on their party.

FairPoint has no hand in the scam emails (also called "phishing"). You wrote this presenting FairPoint as the originator of the scam, as well as somehow responsible for stopping web hacks from sending them. That is very irresponsible journalism. Having said that, I do not defend FairPoints ineptitude with the things they do have control over.

In a Senate where the Democrats are one seat shy of hog-wild voting power, and where Collins and Snowe are two of the only moderate Republicans left, Maine is in a position to say yay or nay to pretty much every substantial piece of national legislation.
Hilarious.
