The Weekend: MV & EE, Port City Music Hall and Where's Justin
Before we jump into all the crazy shenanigans you can get yourself into this weekend, I have to make one quick programming note.
Some of you may already know, but here's the headline: I'm going to DC next week on the Press Herald's Inauguration Squad. I'll be in the district from Sunday through Wednesday and blogging the bejeebus out of it.
So logistically speaking, things will be a little quiet around here for a few days. You will be able to find me over on Political Extra, where I will be live-blogging throughout Tuesday.
But in the meantime, there are things to get into this weekend.
FRIDAY
From the barren, hippie-laden hills of Vermont comeMV & EE, at SPACE Gallery tonight. Now, they have described themselves as "lunar raga," which I can't even begin to wrap my head around. Know this, they are a bit folky, a bit guitary, and at times down right psychedelic. It could get weird, but weird good. Also along for the show are Attar Cups and The Red F. Show starts at 9:30 p.m. and is an $8 ticket.
Power Duo: J.hjort and Moshe are teaming up tonight at Una. Sets start at 9 p.m. Expect heavy base.
The twin-turntable hit man (and proprietor of a new open-mic night)DJ Shade, is live all night at Flask starting at 9 p.m. Be prepared to dance.
SATURDAY
After months of speculation, naysaying, head scratching and construction, the Port City Music Hall opens tonight with a debut show featuring our ownSidecar Radio. ( The Springfield, Mass-based reggae groupthe Fear Nuttin Band today postponed its show until Jan. 24.)
The people behind the Port City Music Hall have been talking a big game about luring in bigger touring acts and providing a place for music you won't find anywhere else in town. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door to get your first glimpse of what the new venue is all about. Doors open at 8 p.m. tonight.
Can't make it to Washington D.C. for the high-wire glamor trap that will be the inaugural balls? Don't worry, you can hit up an early one tonight at Empire Dine and Dance. The Inaugural Ball at Empire, with music by Murder of Crows and Nigel Hall, benefits Hardy Girls Healthy Women, Now it's not exactly cheap, but it is a benefit, so the $25 price tag will go to help a cause...and give you more reason to behave in your fancy clothes. Doors open at 8:30 p.m.
Jump BACK! The Group Hug Productions gang is at work once again, tonight with a dance party at the White Heart. The Duke, R. Tex and King Roomie Rock are collaborating on a little get together they are calling "Boogie Back." Sounds like a sure fire hit. Starts at 9 p.m. And as always at the White Heart - it's free.
Finally, here's the weekend video, and I think it's got instant classic written all over it. Well, maybe it needs a dance sequence. ANYWAY, this is a re-telling of the original Star Wars Trilogy...by someone who has never seen the three movies all the way through. Lord help her. And poor Chewie. Enjoy!
Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove
it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine
Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the
Monday Magazine.
If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture,"
covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college
debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music
scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa
Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.
Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of
Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer,
redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life
would sound like.
When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain
America.
Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and
what they do.
