The Weekend: Kino Proby, and International Dance Party and the Macbook Wheel

We've made it another week and fortunately it's not hazardous just to walk out your front door.

That sounds like reason to celebrate by heading out for a show and a beer to me.

We like to appreciate the small things around the NXT Desk.

FRIDAY

  • The Cambiata has cut a new album and is throwing a release party tonight down at The Station. You know what that means kids...ALL AGES. Along for the fun are guest stars such as The Urgency and Kid:Nap:Kin. They start early at The Station, at 7 p.m., It's a $10 entry.

  • At the rate Kino Proby plays I feel like people will talk about them in tones typically reserved for legends. They play close to once a year, maybe? But the people love them, and it's a good bet tonight's show at The Big Easy will be packed. Loverless is along to take part in the history, and the show starts at 9 p.m. It's $8

  • Jason Keith, also known in some circles as part of ATOMIK, is working the turntables at UNA tonight. Enjoy the sweet house and electronic sounds for free starting at 9:30 p.m.

SATURDAY

  • Head down to Bubba's for a hard rock showcase tonight, including Rulers of the Raging Main, Roadsaw and Sun Gods in Exile, starting at 9:30 p.m. The good times come cheap at $6.

  • The Outsiders headlines a night of rock, rock-a-billy and fancy ladies at Geno's. The fancy lady part is supplied by the Whistlebait Burlesque squad. So if that is your cup of bourbon, then enjoy. Katzenjammer and Vagabond Kings also play starting at 9 p.m.

  • SPACE Gallery is taking the dance party international tonight with the visiting The Occidental Brothers Dance Band International, known for their blend of African, jazz and dance rhythms. If that was not good enough, Latin dance darlingsGroupo Esperanza, will also be on the scene to get things moving. The show starts at 8:30 pm., it's a $10 cover.

Finally, I could not resist. Mac World was this week and the masses were all talking about one thing. The ONN has this report on what will probably be the next big thing in 2009. I've already thrown out my old laptop in anticipation

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
