The Weekend: Celebrate Repeal Day with rockabilly, electronica and local art
Time to suit up people. Today is REPEAL DAY and that means it's time to celebrate in a way our teetotaling ancestors only wish they could have. Even if that means having your usual post-work, unwind PBR, at least take a second to savor it. Remember, that cocktail you overpaid for is a right, not a privilege.
Also, after my first full week back on the desk, I'd like to give a big thanks to all the guest bloggers who filled in while I was gone, many thanks to Videoport Jones, Nicki Hicks, Michael Gregoire, Calvin Gilbert and Lauren Wayne. A special weekend shout out to Lauren, who you can check out her mad DJ skills as half of H++L, who are throwing one of their dance parties tomorrow night at the White Heart.
J.Hjort and The Secret Weekend begin an electonica voyage tonight at the White Heart, starting at 9 p.m.
Goodwill is throwing an art sale? Yes indeed. The fine folks who provide us with sweet deals on used clothes and last-minute costumes is throwing "Art for Everyone", starting at 5 p.m. today. The show is at 353 Cumberland Ave. in Portland, with art from local artists and members of the community. The best part? They promise it will be just as affordable as the clothes.
SATURDAY
Followers of The Sophmore Beat know Mike Prue, a member of the band that was injured in a head-on car collision in September. Prue has been slowly recovering since then and the band has been pulling together benefit shows to help Prue with the medical costs. Tonight at the Big Easy Lost on Liftoff, Rustic Overtones and Faster! Faster play to give a helping hand. Suggested donations start at $5. Show starts at 4 p.m.
Kira Kira is at SPACE. It sounds like downright crazy Scandy pop, but could be a good go. I'll let this descriptor from her MySpace page do the rest of the talking: "Kira Kira plays toymusic, cozy draculateeth scary dreamy. She runs Kitchen Motors with Hilmar Jensson & Jóhann Jóhannsson and stages hauntings - filmed on super 8, recorded on the pocket dictaphone. She's making a film about Sigríður Níelsdóttir with Orri, Inga & Maggi." So, yeah. Doors at 9 p.m., show starts at 9:30 p.m., and it's a $7 show.
Because I'm just in a holidazzle kind of mood, more local art goodness to pass off as gifts. The annual MECA & Society for the East End Arts art sale runs through this weekend at the East End Community School in Portland. Arts, crafts, bobbles, doodads! There is sure to be something for everyone, and if you look good enough, a few serious deals. The sale runs 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. today and 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Sunday.
Finally, the weekend video, which caught fire on the Interwebs this week. It's Prop 8: The Musical! Yes, spinning out of the passage of the Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in California, a group of actors including Jack Black, John C. Riley, Rashida Jones, Maya Rudolph, Neil Patrick Harris, Craig Robinson, Alisson Janney and many, many more. This musical adaptation comes to an interesting conclusion on why allowing gay marriage may not be such a bad thing. But you be the judge! Enjoy!
Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove
it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine
Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the
Monday Magazine.
If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture,"
covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college
debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music
scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa
Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.
Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of
Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer,
redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life
would sound like.
When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain
America.
Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and
what they do.
