The Weekend: Big Coffin Hunters, Brother Ali, Lando and more
I feel like this weekend is the beginning of a big break for a lot of folks. Presidential elections can become life consuming, and after one that lasted more than two years and millions of dollars (not to mention billions of TV hours. Thank goodness that ads are gone) we finally have a break.
Seriously, who couldn't use a break this weekend? Lucky for you we've got a mix of everything.
FRIDAY
TheBig Coffin Hunters will unleash a new album on the world tonight at Geno's, and please for your own sake, be prepared. Their latest effort "Drive Another Nail" will be available, and as a bonus limited-edition T-shirts! Supplying additional metal tonight are Ogre and Werewolves on Wheels. The show starts at 9 p.m. and it's a $5 entry.
Pop Night at Una? OK, you may be asking yourself, why is he promoting anything at Una, especially the new dance club that he took a shot at a few months ago? The short answer would be I'm a hypocrite. But really, it's not a bad venue...as long as it's a free entry, and it is tonight! Rocket. One of Miss Fairchild and WePushButtons (and Roller Derby too I guess. He's busy) fame will be spinning nothing but danceable, mind-relaxing, fun-inducing pop music. We can pretend to hate it, but we love it. Starts at 9 p.m.
Behold!Paranoid Social Club is playing tonight down at the Big Easy with Div Kid and Station 85 are in with the assist. Show starts at 9 p.m.
SATURDAY
It's one of my most favorite days of the year! The WMPG Record Sale starts at 10 a.m. in Sullivan Gym on the University of Southern Maine Portland campus. What can I say that I have not blabbered on about previously in blogs, columns and yes, a podcast. Cheap records to help stock the collection. Anything you could ever be looking for (and a lot you're not.) And you're helping out a good cause. So I'll see you there.
My hometown hip-hop albino wonder is returning to Maine. Brother Ali is back in Portland tonight and playing the Asylum with Ill Bill, Sean Price, Toki Wright. The Rhymesayers alum is a busy man and has visited Maine a handful of times. He also just released a track about brand-new president elect. Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 day of and the show starts at 9 p.m.
Speaking of the Rhymesayers connection, in his last album, Pomegranate, Astronautalis worked with P.O.S. Astro will be in town tonight at Bubba's along with Bleubird for an indie-rap smash. For those of you with long memories, you'll recall that Bleubird is on the same record label as hometown hip-hopstress Sontiago, so it's probably an even bet that she may make an appearance. Show starts at 9:30 p.m., it's a $6 entry.
Finally, your weekend video. I've had politics on the brain for some time now thanks to my recent reassignment to the politics desk. Thought that's all finally over - almost - but somehow I managed to miss this gem from earlier in the week. How could I not know about a video that not only makes fun of politics, Star Wars, AND my favorite Star Wars character, that old space pirate himself, Lando Calrissian?
Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove
it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine
Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the
Monday Magazine.
If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture,"
covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college
debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music
scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa
Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.
Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of
Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer,
redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life
would sound like.
When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain
America.
Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and
what they do.
