The Monday Fix: Mourning the Sox, cranking out votes and Palin Live

If today's Monday Fix seems a little TV-heavy it's because there was a lot of action on the flat screen this weekend. Sports, politics (I guess that's on TV all the time now) and dancing moose, this weekend had it all.

ITEM 1: Sox Nation in Mourning?

It's a solemn day in Red Sox nation after the Rays victory last night. Thanks to the power of Twitter we can see how fans felt during the game and how they are coping in the aftermath.

Also, if many of you were wondering what the heck happened Saturday night when the beginning of Game 6 disappeared and reruns of "The Steve Harvey Show" appeared, TBS apparently had a bit of a technical meltdown. If the people in the bar I was at were any indication, the Nation must not have been happy. (*Note - I was at the bar to watch my Missouri Tigers get smoked by Texas. I do not want to discuss this further.)

ITEM 2: Whipping up the youth vote

- With just over two weeks until election day, the push is switching from reaching and registering voters to getting them out to the polls. On the University of Maine campus the campus Democrats and Republicans are putting differences aside and whipping up the voters. We can probably expect to see more in the next week.

ITEM 3: Palin goes 'Live'

- In case you missed it (or were still high on the Sox Game 6 win), Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin made her apperance on "Saturday Night Live" this past weekend and scored some high ratings for "SNL" in the process.
Palin appeared in the open along with Tina Fey, Alex Baldwin, Lorne Michaels and...Mark Wahlberg? She also popped up during Weekend Update for what will go down in political history as "The Palin Rap.*" (*as not performed by Sarah Palin.)

I'd be interested to hear what you thought about the Republican vice presidential nominee's turn on the show.

Wow... thanks for the SNL shout-out. I don't have TV, but the Palin rap was DEFINITELY worth watching.

Whatever you think of her, definitely have to give a candidate props for having the guts to go on SNL. Wonderful!

I have been a Saturady Night Live fan since I was 12 (now 43)and I think that the SNL Thursday Edition is anything but funny. It is very appearant that Tina Fey and her writers are really struggling to come up with material to make us laugh. I know these guys are not the same SNL crew of the 80's but, funny is funny and that is something I have yet to find alot of, in the latest SNL airings, whether it be Thursday or Saturday night.

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
