The Weekend: Phantom Buffalo, Darien Brahms and the immortal Don LaFontaine
The landscape is changing, my friends. Summer is turning into a rainy fall (much like a rainy spring) and meanwhile, in Portland, smokers are once again getting pushed around. (Luckily all those cigarettes leaves them winded in a fight) Sure you'll still be able to smoke after 10 p.m., but what will you do before then, nic fiends? What indeed.
FRIDAY
Here's a hot ticket to get the weekend started - Phantom Buffalo, Gully and Computer at Sea back-to-back-to-back at Geno's starting at 9 p.m.
H++L, those wacky lesbian DJs are at it again! This time they're throwing another one of their dance parties tonight down at the White Heart tonight at 9. Go. Dance. Hard. Well, not too hard. Expect a grand mashing together of 80s classics, house and electronic music.
Syn the Shaman (known to some as KGB) is releasing his new CD, "The Cure," tonight over at Empire Dine and Dance. Naturally the Milled Pavement team will be in the building, including Mike Clouds and Moshe, as well as others like Nicotine, Graymatter, Alt. and more. Show starts at 9 p.m.
SATURDAY
The big wheel of CD releases just keeps turning, with one of Portland's all stars celebrating her newest album. Darien Brahms's "Number 4" gets the full roll-out tonight, with a special assist from The Hot Tarts at SPACE Gallery at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $8. It's been five years since her last album, "Green Valentine," so you can bet this will be a packed house. If you can't make the show, check out the pre-party at the White Heart starting at 6 p.m.
Seepeoples Returns! The North Carolina band is back at the Big Easy tonight with their brand of electro-pop-rock. There's a reason these guys consistency fill the house when they return to town each year. Show starts at 9 p.m.
Close out the summer the right way and savor the good times smokers. Jerks of Grass are playing the deck at Amigos starting at 9 p.m. Bluegrass and a familiar crowd starved for PBR and smokes. Ah, freedom.
Finally, as mentioned previously, Don LaFontaine, the king of voiceovers, died recently. Funny or Die has a sweet mash-up of some of his best stuff. All of which you'll probably recognize.
Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove
it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine
Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the
Monday Magazine.
If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture,"
covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college
debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music
scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa
Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.
Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of
Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer,
redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life
would sound like.
When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain
America.
Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and
what they do.
