NXT Radio: How to feel with Subject Bias

Who said things were slow around the NXT Desk? Sure I was away for a week - luckily we had some folks to fill in. And sure, I'll be taking off again tomorrow - this time for a real vacation.

But just because we love you, it's time for a new NXT Podcast!

I know, I know, it's been a while since we've had a new show. But things have been busy, and there was that time I was out with the bacon sweats.

ANYWAY, this week we've got a conversation with Kevin Ouellette, frontman and founder of the band Subject Bias about their newest album and the revolving door of the Portland music scene.

Subject Bias' newest album "I'll tell you when, where and how to feel" is already available online (for FREE) but will be released officially this Saturday at a release party at One Longfellow Square.

We had a long and wide ranging conversation - one that actually broke the audio recorder. (OK, not so much broke as ate up the remaining disk space. My bad.)

We talked about what exactly "indie" music means these days, the freedom that comes from having an open band (like an "open relationship") and why giving your music away online is not such a bad thing.

Take a listen, and head over to Subject Bias' website to steal some music if you like. Well, if it's free, it's not technically stealing, but if you call it stealing it sounds more exciting.

And remember - the NXT Podcast is now available on iTunes! We're getting big time!

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
