It's us or them

We've been down this road many times, it seems. Every time it looks like we're clear, we end up overrun, outmanned and arguing.

And that, my friends, is no way to beat the zombies.

It's summer again, and just as you can be sure red hot dogs will be hitting grills and Loonie-toting French speakers will be spending their funny money around town, we all know it's time for the annual zombie outbreak.

I'm talking about Zombie Kickball. Just when we thought we were safe...they're back, and more than likely stronger than ever.

As I wrote in today's column it seems it's a great time to be a member of the living dead.

(Well, you know, aside from the actual dying part. And that soulless wandering the earth bit. Oh, and the brain eating. But who knows, maybe brains taste like chicken. Wow, that thought got away from me quickly.)

If this were some sort of Hollywood/star-humping celebu-blog I'd probably say something like "Zombies are soooo hot right now!"

But seriously, think about it. It seems like we get a new zombie movie every few months, and at least a new one from George Romero every other year. And let's not forget the always handy "Zombie Survival Guide" which will be all-important once "Z-Day" comes.

I think it's high time to confront two harsh realities here: Zombies are becoming alarmingly popular - how long till we have a zombie sitcom on CBS? Secondly, is all of this making us marginalize the threat that zombies really present? What if we've become soft on zombies?

I, for one, plan to not take this lying down (it's easier for them to eat you that way.)

Come Sunday I plan to fight back and beat those undead fiends at their own game ... and lop some heads off along the way. (It's the only sure way to kill 'em.)

Has America fallen in love with zombies? Have we gone soft on zombies?
Will you fight back? JOIN THE RESISTANCE!

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
