SOUND OFF: Mac Mysteries and iPie Dreams

One of the more inescapable news stories today is Apple CEO Steve Jobs' speech at Apple's Word Wide Developers Conference today.

Apparently it's a widely held rumor that Jobs plans to announce a next generation iPhone today.

But what if he doesn't?

Now, it would make perfect sense and there are at least a few signs pointing to the emergence of a new iPhone - particularly the disappearance of iPhones from stores and the Apple Store site going down. There are also signs that Apple wants to be quick to jump on AT&T's new 3G (i.e. faster) network.

But what if it's all a psych out? What if Jobs is just messing with the geek and gadget lusting masses?

What if it's not a new iPhone Jobs is announcing, but perhaps an Apple Doomsday device? The iMmageddon? What if it's a music-playing refrigerator or talking cars that can stream your favorite TV shows?

What if it's androids that can organize all of your family photos and videos, and can not only recite Pi to the last decimal, but also make delicious Apple™ pie (iPie?).

Meanwhile, if you care to follow the Apple Madness, Laughing Squid has a good round-up of places to follow announcements from today's conference.

SOUND OFF: What do you think Apple has going on in its development labs? Space stations? Dinosaur cloning? Hover cars?

Do you care if a new iPhone is released today?

With all eyes in the mobile world on Apple this week I thought the time was right to talk about what we believe is the best way to conduct a mobile web search on a device like the iPhone…a device with a rich, full screen, touchscreen only. Namely: Voice search. You say it, our speech recognition (running on a server) produces text, the text automatically dumps into the search engine that’s the subscriber’s choice (Google, AOL, MSN, etc.), the search engine returns results. Or via voice, search for any content from your local iTunes playlists.

Using the Apple developer kit, we’ve been hard at work developing impressive technology that make the iPhones capabilities even more powerful. Voice search. Song search and selection. At the touch of a button and simply by saying the word. Over the next few days – as the excitement mounts for the WWDC – we’ll be sharing more and more details here on our blog. For now though, I think all of us should sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

Of course, we believe the most powerful use of speech would be running on the iPhone itself (vs a remote server) and made available to the developer community via iPhone’s SDK APIs.

In response to MH's comment: "Simply by saying the word" - ha! Maybe by saying the word, then repeating the word over and over, then shouting the word, then swearing at the device.

I'm for less talking, not more. Cell yell is annoying enough without folks wandering around shouting random words into their devices.

I think Apple's due to release another dud. Remember the round mouse? Ha!

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
