The Scanner: The Interweb has no last-call

Hey boys and girls. I was out sick yesterday, so I didn't get a chance to get the Scanner up in time. So here it is for your weekend scanning pleasure. Not sure if we'll get a Weekend blog in today, but I'll make no promises.

In the meantime we've got cats that look like Wilford Brimley, Lindsay Lohan's mom, NBA Jam nostalgia and PBR coffins. Yeah, you only get that in The Scanner.

IGN has a sweet retrospective on NBA Jam - including a list of the 10 best hidden characters which includes The Fresh Prince and a President!

What makes the Maine School of Science and Math one of U.S. News and World Report's top high schools? Maybe it's because everyday is like an episode of "Mythbusters." (Thanks to "graphics czar" Jeff)

It's that time of year for funny prom or prom fashion stories - so be prepared for more fashion like this Skittles wrapper dress. (Hat tip: Neatorama)

After seeing Iron Man, my love /respect for Jeff Bridges grew even more. Now the L.A. Times has 10 reasons why Bridges is underrated...and awesome. (Hat tip: Pop Candy)

This is some hotness: A pair of Nike Dunks that detect WiFi. They're called "a step in the right direction." (Hat tip: Engadget)

Would you buy a Kobe Beef hamburger from Burger King...for $166? (Hat tip: Trend Hunter)

I don't know why, but this is funny - Cats that look like Wilford Brimley. WE GOT BRIMLEY! (Hat tip: Boing Boing)

Bound to happen - Gizmodo asks the question which billionaire superhero playboy would you like to be, Bruce Wayne (Batman) or Tony Stark (Iron Man)

Not that I'm much for celebrity gossip - but with Mother's Day coming up would you believe Lindsay Lohan's mom is getting a "Top Mom" award? (Hat tip: Daily Intel)

TRAILER WATCH: If you caught "Iron Man" you've already seen this, but if not, prepare yourself for the new Dark Knight Trailer

More Bat-goodness? Friends, you can own your OWN Batmobile, all for the low eBay price of $500,000. It's one of the originals from the Tim Burton "Batman" days.

In more geek movie news - don't forget we'll also be getting a new helping of "Star Wars" this summer with the "Clone Wars" movie. (Hat tip: Cinematical)

When you ask yourself how much you love a certain beer, it's not as much as Bill Bramati, who had has coffin made to look like a PBR can. You win sir. (Thanks to ac)

Somehow Nintendo Wii, Microloans and are all examples of the gains from hacks/mods.

Rights of Way looks at The Coachella Express (the train that took people to the annual music festival) and ponders a similar fun train ride from Maine's past.

Get your funny elsewhere - Super Deluxe has gone under and will be swept into the Adult Swim empire. One less online video site really bother anyone? (Hat tip:New TeeVee)

Salon's Machinist wonders if the music industry's attack on college campuses is all to beef-up it's piracy stats.

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
