The Scanner: Standing on top of the world

The view from up here is good - There's a lot of Internets out there, and only so much time. I guess it's a good thing we've got The Scanner - cherry-picking the best of pop culture, music, technology and more.

For the last few days I've been making my way through this NY Magazine story on a Facebook controversy at the prestigious (and expensive) Horace Mann prep school in New York. Tales of the spoiled and rich, and the teachers who would stand in their way. (Hat tip: Sports Guy's World)

Something else that intrigued me this week - Web Scout has a look at what the worth of a follower on Twitter.

If you have not caught the show "Reaper" on the CW, I think you're missing out. (Not the most serious of entertainments, but light, fun stuff...considering it involves the devil and selling souls.) ANYWAY, check out this video from the set! Respect the Public Enemy. (Thanks to ac!)

Boing Boing has an interesting round-up of the reaction to some of the more seedy elements of Grand Theft Auto IV. (Potentially NSFW...proceed with caution.)

The gang over at Urlesque (who I got to meet briefly) have more ROFLCon-fallout - check out their gallery of "I Can Haz..." photos from the Con. You may recognize a few faces...

Did you know April 29 is an important date in history - the first battle between Godzilla and Mothra took place in 1964!

This caught fire on the webs just yesterday - Buzz Bisinger (author of "Friday Night Lights") tees off on Deadspin editor Will Leitch about sports blogs on "Costas Now." Any reader of sports blogs knows old-school sports reports have no love for the Interwebs brand of sports culture.

In other "struggle for the future of news" news, an afternoon daily newspaper in Madison, Wisconsin, decides to drop the print and go all-online. (Thanks to Alex)

Were you aware the first Friday in May is always "No Pants Day?" Beware Casual Friday tomorrow.

If you have not already seen the time-lapsed video of a man stuck in an elevator 41 hours give it a watch. Strangely captivating...maybe its the spooky piano score.

YACHT ROCK ALERT: Daryl Hall is playing a show in Freeport this summer! It's sans Oates, so take that into consideration. (Thanks to ac)

TRAILER WATCH: This may just be exciting to me, but The Venture Bros. is retuning to Adult Swim this summer! (Hat tip: Pop Candy)

TRAILER WATCH 2: New Trailer is out for "The Incredible Hulk" and I gotta say I am more than a little interested. Can't be any worse than the first movie. (Hat tip: Cinematical)

"Director" Uwe Boll has challenged Michael Bay to a fight. Yeah. Well, I know Videoport Jones would pay to watch that. (Hat tip: G4)

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
