The Weekend: It's that time

You've been waiting for it, I've been waiting for it. The beverages are on ice, the T-shirt gun I had the PPH lab boys whip up is primed.

It's the weekend and the NXT Blogaversary and Meet-up is here. Saturday night, 7 p.m. at Dock Fore. Stop on by the share some stories, meet some people or compare bacon recipes. Or just to tell me my writing needs work.

Best part - It's a wacky New England three-day weekend! I may not understand you Patriot's Day, but I'll accept you on my calendar.

    FRIDAY

    • Grand Buffet? Grand FREAKING Buffet at SPACE tonight. Be honest, when was the last time you listened to some Grand Buffet? They're on tour again, and in the process hopefully putting an end to all the "whatever happened to Grand Buffet" questions. Maybe not all of them. Funny hip-hop over synth and heavy beats? Something tells me it's gonna be a packed house. Doors open at 9 p.m. for the 9:30 p.m. show and tickets are $7.

    • The WePushButtons crew is on the offensive tonight, and taking over the upstairs at Amigos. See if you read the blog now you'll save yourself the confusion when you walk past Amigos and hear something other than metal blaring out of the windows. J.hjort, Metris, Vik44, Moshe and Brandon Miles are the hosts and DJs for the evening. It's a 9 p.m. show with a low, low $3 cover.

    • Following along on the funk theme tonight Boombazi is playing at the Big Easy. Respect the full band and horn section, not an easy thing to pull off. Stop by at show time and you'll also get an open from Spose and a set from The Press Project. Doors open at 9 p.m. and it's a $5 entry.

    SATURDAY

    • Rise UP and get down to your local vinyl dealer because today is Record Store Day! If we can have Secretaries Day, National Pig Day and Mother's Day (is that coming up?), why not a day for something else that has played an important role in your life? Today at Bull Moose Locations and Newbury Comics you'll find sweet giveaways and live music. Samuel James performs at the Portland Bull Moose, while Twisted Roots is in Brunswick, Darien Brahms and Dominic and the Lucid will be at the Scarborough warehouse store. Newbury's store in South Portland will feature Fire on Fire, Moshe, Alias and The Hot Tarts.

    • It's GREYDAY over at the Asylum tonight with West Coast funk masters The Greyboy Allstars are in town tonight in support of their new album "What Happened to Television?" Ask yourself how you feel about deep bass and organ funk and think whether this is a show you'll want to see. I'm guessing the answer is yes. If you got up for the Soulive than chances are you'll dig this. Tickets are $20 and the doors open at 9 p.m.

    • To round things out in an already funk-heavy weekend Slavic Soul Party returns to town with their one-of-a-kind, Klezmerfied stylings. You may never get a chance to get to Eastern Europe, but the Soul party brings a little bit of it with them wherever they go, along with a dose of gypsy sounds and good old-fashioned American Funk. A blast and not to be missed. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. for the show at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10.

Finally your weekend video is as much fun as it is edutainmental. Looking to impress your friends, trick your enemies or otherwise come up on the winning side of a bar tab? This simple trick will do all of that and more. Sure you could use it for a beer, but I'm guessing the math might always work out with a Coke or Dr. Pepper if you're not a beer person. Just make sure you've got your measurements right.

    See you Saturday!

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
