Think Local - Music & Poetry Edition

Don't worry, this is not another shameless plug for the blogaversary and meet-up. I'll spare you that. Instead, it's a less shameless plug for a few local groups holding some sweet events in Portland tonight.

The Portland Music Foundation is holding another free workshop on makin' a livin' in the music business.

With a title like "Mistakes Were Made" tonight's workshop is shaping up to be a good one.
The session will feature an all local lineup of musicians and music industry people talking about all the things they wish they could take back, reverse or generally wipe out of their own history in the business.

Remember all those talks from your parents about "do as I say, not as I do," well this is like that, but without the lecturing tone.

The line-up includes Brett Wickard, co-owner of Bull Moose, Herb Ivy (friend of the podcast) program director and operations manager for WBLM and WCYY, singer/songwriter Kate Schrock, rapper/songstress Sontiago, and Charlie Gaylord, creator of the "Greetings from Area Code 207" series, among others.

The workshop begins at 6:30 p.m. over at the St. Lawrence Arts Center on Munjoy Hill.

Down on the other end of Congress Street at SPACE Gallery the non-profit writing workshop The Telling Room is holding a night of poetry readings to celebrate National Poetry Month.

An outlet for young and aspiring writers, The Telling Room works with schools and community groups to encourage writing and the discovery (or re-discovery) of the joys of the written word.

Tonight's readings will not have one overall theme, instead emphasizing the idea that anyone can be a poet. The readings will come from poet Jeffrey Thompson, clothing designer Jill McGowan, Portland City Councilor Jill Duson, Chris Bowe, co-owner of Longfellow Books, Francisco Andreu, Director of the Cambalache Spanish Center and eighth grader Madeline Micalizio.

Doors open at SPACE at 6:30 p.m. for the reading at 7 p.m. Tickets are free for students and $5 for the rest of us.

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
