The Scanner - No blog is an island
This is what it's all about people - The Scanner. We all spend entirely too much time on the interwebs and want to share what we found.
Ain't that sweet?
We talked about the fate of newspapers a few weeks back. One of the people I talked to, Sarah Trent, is involved in a new project looking at newspapers in the digital age. Are we doomed? (Thanks to Sarah for the link)
The Rickster wins AGAIN. The New York Mets held an online competition to decide what song to use during the seventh inning stretch. In the grand tradition of "Sweet Caroline," "Never Gonna Give You Up" won. But the Metsare instead holding a run-off vote to decide the winner and deny fans of their Astley. "Livin' on a Prayer" apparently has an inside track. (Hat tip to Randball)
I have absolutely no problem believing bloggers work themselves to the point of serious health problems...and death. (Thanks to NXT reader - and graphics guru - Jeff)
We're No. 4! We're No. 4! We're No. 4! Denmark has the most networked economy, or economy best prepared for Internet connectivity and new technology. And we're in fourth. (Thanks to NXT reader ac)
File this under family news of the weird: A baby in India was born with two faces. Two faces, which apparently caused by a rare condition. Two faces. (Thanks to NXT reader Sean)
Traveling abroad? Lucky you. When a currency converter is not enough when you're tying to budget for expenses, try the Pint Price calculator. Only $3.12 for a pint on average in Malta. (Thanks to NXT reader Rachel)
If President Bush is truly relying on history as the judge of his successes and failures, then this poll from historians is not a good trend. He's in James Buchanan territory apparently. (Thanks to NXT reader Jen)
Ever wonder about the editorial philosophy of Maxim? Consider it's publisher, who claims to have killed a man, and have been addicted to cocaine and hookers.
When will it end Hollywood? A re-make of "Short Circuit" is apparently in the works. Why Johnny 5? (Hat tip: Pop Candy)
Everybody! The Homestarrunner gang is apparently cooking up a Strongbad video game for PC and the Wii! No word whether Trogdor will make an appearance. We can only hope. (Hat tip: G4)
Maine's got soul! Bryan Hill of Alfred is one of 10 finalists in Essence Magazine's take back the music contest. Head on over and check out his song "Verbal Medicine," and make sure to give him your vote! (Thanks to NXT reader Shannon)
The Reel Pop Blog takes a look at a new site called Porn for the Blind and the strange comedy that ensues. If you thought porn was already silly, guess what happens when someone dryly reads and describes a site? (Note: The Reel Pop review is work safe - though contains some "adult language." No vouching for the actual Porn for the Blind site.)
Something to keep an eye on college students: A University of Florida professor is suing a lecture notes repackaging company for infringing on the professor's copyright by selling copies of his notes. The case is not only important to companies like Cliffs Notes, but potentially the notes you take.
File this under inspired and sad prototypes: NapTV, a monitor that sits over a child as they lay down for sleepy time. I don't even know where to begin with how wrong that is. (Hat tip: Gizmodo)
Remember we're always looking for submissions for The Scanner. Found something good online? Send it our way over e-mail or AIM (JustinNXT).
