I think we all like to talk a lot of smack about Canada every now and then. After all, they are incredibly nice people, speak funny and get really excited about curling and Don Cherry (but who doesn't?). But there is also hip-hop fresh from the northern boundaries! Tonight over at SPACE Ghettosocks, of "Step to a T-Rex" fame, will be playing along with local faves Sontiago, Dilly Dilly and Gabe FM, a trio I would like to now nickname "Dillyago FM." You heard it here first.
Show starts at 9:30, doors open at 9. It's a $7 entry
Just across the street there will be more beat mechanics, with a more distinctly American flavor if you are feeling particularly nativistic. Friend of the NXT Podcast DJ Graymatter and DJ Nicotine are burning up the turntables starting at 9 p.m. with funk, house and maybe some hip-hop if you're nice.
The Weekend of 'Stache begins TONIGHT at the Big Easy with rockers Headstart playing to a facial hair-friendly crowd. The Leftovers and Go Casual are along for the 'Stache-tastic Voyage as well. It's a 21 plus show, starts at 9 and is $5, unless of course you are sporting a 'stache...in which case you get in free. Shave those beards ladies!
SATURDAY
The hours are counting down to the First Annual 'Stache Pag,' brought to you buy the gentlemen of leisure (and hair) over at March Moustache Madness. Tonight at Flask Lounge the pag' will take place starting at 10, with entries to be decided on by a panel of judges. Bring your "Magnum," your "Uncle Rico," and anything else for a chance at a price. I may have to let the beard have some time off for this one.
Ask for more rock and ye shall receive it...uh, verily. Twisted Roots is headlining the Big Easy tonight with Big Coffin Hunters and Heart Shaped Rock batting lead-off. Good, old-fashioned, get-excited and bring a friend, rock at the Big Easy. Starts at 9 p.m. and entry is $5.
There could be no better time of year than March for the Maine Jewish Film Festival since the dead of winter(spring I guess) is usually slim pickings for movies. Twenty-two films over nine days showing on venues around town including the Nickalodeon, The Movies on Exchange, SPACE Gallery and The Portland Museum of Art. It all starts today with an opening party at Greenhut Galleries and The film "My Mexican Shivah" at the Nick. (Which is sold out. Sorry.)
If you didn't get a chance, check out Bob Keyes story Sunday about the growth of the festival over the years.
We'll leave you today with a good old-fashioned on-air journalism cat fight between an anchor and field reporter. It's times like this (and weathermen, and the movie "Anchorman") that makes me enjoy TV news. Good Day NY indeed.
Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove
it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine
Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the
Monday Magazine.
If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture,"
covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college
debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music
scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa
Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.
Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of
Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer,
redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life
would sound like.
When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain
America.
Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and
what they do.
Up ahead: The Stream Reggae Band
The irresistible reggae rhythms and melodies will be there in abundance with an evening of music deep in the sunny groove of the Caribbean.
