Sweet Sixteen Bracket-stravaganza Update

Coming to you live from the NXT College Basketball Studios here at Press Herald Plaza, I'm Justin Ellis here with analysts former Duke standout Christian Laettner and frequent "where are they now" question God Shammgod, of Providence College to take a look at the Hoops Challenge standings going into this week's round of NCAA games.

While all the number one seeds advanced, there were just enough upsets to do some damage and add a little bit of excitement. (Thanks Davidson)

Here's the standings going into today's games, along with champion picks

1 Xmid1990shardcoreX (UCLA)
2 All Hail Hypnotoad (Wisconsin)
3 JF's bracket of bacon! (UNC)
4 Dempsey (UCLA)
5 Did Mizzou make the CBI? (Kansas)
5 Euro Treasure (Kansas)
5 salukis was robbed (Tennessee)
5 Don't Mess with Sausage (UCLA)
5 The Dagger!*(Georgetown)
10 The Boom Kings (UNC)

(*Denotes bracket of the proprietor of this blog...and his now washed out pick.)

Though it's probably for the best that I'm not winning my own bracket pool, the competitive streak in me is not too happy. But that streak also likes watching great basketball, so it's not too upset.

One of these people will walk away with a fabulous prize: A NXT Desk-made T-shirt and free guest post. Not to mention all those sweet bragging rights.

Now if they can only survive more potential upsets and CBS commercials for "Two and a Half Men," and AXE body spray (does anyone else see serious problems with that commercial, most notably who answers the door shirtless?).

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
