The Scanner: Records, writer bars and March Beer Madness

They're coming for you...and they brought The Scanner with them.
(Andy Paradise/Guinness World Records.)
Yes, that's right. Around 80 people gathered in London to dress up as their favorite video game characters and break a Guinness world record. Here's another gallery of scary video game shenanigans.
I've had more than a few people point out Stuff White People Like, the satiric blog that describes stuff white people apparently like. But over at the New Republic they have a theory about why SWPL has caught on and whether it's actually funny.
Speaking of race and stereotypes - Barack Obama's speech this week on race is the top video on YouTube. But does it have the staying power of The Evolution of Dance?
If you thought the East Coast/West Coast rap battles of the 90s were done and buried, think again. The LA Times has an investigation that raises interesting questions about P. Diddy.
What's more depressing than the loss of newspapers and newspaper jobs? The resulting loss of bars haunted by journalists. I will not let this backslide continue. (Hat tip: Portland Psst!)
Want another reason why the Internet is revolutionizing music? Gnarls Barkley's second album showed up on iTunes early this week. The album, The Odd Couple was scheduled to drop the second week of April, but will now be available next week on CD. (Thanks to NXT chief Shoptalker John.)
Want to hear great news? Michael Cera is working on a new film with Edgar Wright, director of "Hot Fuzz" and "Shawn of the Dead."
Gamer News: An update for anyone who saw "King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters," (and really, you need to do it already). Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell are still competing for the best score, separated only by 1,100 points.
Attention Joss Whedon Fans: He's working on a short Web project called "Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog" that features Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion. This news may or may not only be interesting to Videoport Jones.
Moment of silence for Arthur Clarke, scientist, theorist and author of such science fiction work as "2001: A Space Odyssey."
Can't deal with March Madness? (Sorry if I pushed you over the edge.) Would you instead be interested in the Washington Post's Beer Madness bracket? The Post took 65 beers from around the country (Maine's entry was the Austin Peay-esque Sea Dog Brewing) and had testers take it down to one winner. What more awesome than this? The Post apparently has a beer columnist.
Here's a great use for those random shopping carts you see around town - race 'em like in the Chicago "Chiditarod. (Hat tip: Pop Candy)
Uh-oh. Nintendo failed Greenpeace's guide to greener electronics. Oh Mario, why do you hate the environment? (Hat tip: Game Life)
Here's something interesting - A new documentary on the rise of Nerdcore, the hip-hop genre that is exactly what it sounds like. Ah MC Frontalot, you do front, a lot. (Thanks to NXT reader AC)
