The Scanner: Nostalgia can be dangerous

Looks like it's time for The Scanner - that weekly stroll through the Internet's bad part of town. Make sure to hold onto your purse, and don't talk to anyone.

SPACE Gallery wants to get in the T-shirt business. Specifically they want you to design a t-shirt for them. Cool prizes (OK, $50 and free passes to SPACE) abound. Also T-shirt glory.

This whole Navy shooting a satellite out of the sky thing has been surreal, to the point that I'm beginning to wonder if Jack Bauer is somehow involved. ANYWAY, here's CNN's footage of the 'splosion. Sadly it's not very Death Star-esque.

If you thought "Road House" was awesome as a film (and there is no better word to describe it than "awesome") then check out Road House: The Novel. Oh it's that good. (Hat tip

As far as jobs go, Chief Beer Officer wouldn't be a bad title would it?

If you are on the fence about whether Will Ferrell will recapture the Burgundy magic with Semi-Pro, perhaps this will change your mind. (Hat tip to NXT reader ac)

Here's good news for Arrested Development fans, that talk of a AD movie is not going away. Thanks you Jason Bateman. (Hat tip to NXT reader Tim)

Why did no one tell me Daryl Hall has his own online realty TV show? (Hat tip: Pop Candy)

Impossibly, improbably, inconceivably... the Smurfs are making a comeback. I will only see this film if it's called "You Just Got Smurfed."

Is it really surprising that The Sharper Image has gone bankrupt? Alot of sitting and trying out vibrating chairs in those stores, not a lot of buying. Apparently the Ironic Breeze air purifier is what did them in.

Here's something apparently no one considered - are hybrid cars too quiet for deaf people to hear them coming? Ooops.

Question - how to get your drugs where they need to be, when they need to be there? FedEx, of course. (Hat tip: Neatorama)

Are the cell phone wars finally going to benefit the consumer? Maybe. Verizon released an unlimited talk/text/data plan just ahead of Sprint. Will it work? Depends how much you hate overage fees. (Hat tip: Bits)

How cool is this - a bus with WiFi on it? (Hat tip: Engadet)

No matter what your preference may be if you're a Dem in the ongoing presidential primary fight, ask yourself would you put together a video like this to support your candidate? Also, does anyone else think it sounds like a theme song to a sitcom?

You may have seen the story we had earlier in the week about a crack down on energy drinks for the kids. Now attorneys general from various states want to investigate. (Check out the post from Consumerist if only for the photo. Please.

I. Wow. The power of Rick Astley knows no bounds. (Hat tip: Neatorama)

Did you know Coolio has a cooking show online? Let that settle in. (Hat tip: Reel Pop)

Finally, don't forget the NXT desk is polling interest in holding a bacon festival for National Pig Day here in Maine. If you enjoy bacon and good times (and really, don't they go together), and want to make the Portland Bacon Festival a reality, leave a comment, e-mail me or IM me at JustinNXT.

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
