On a screen near you
Two interesting bits of cinema around town tonight, and no, they are not Oscar-related.
Tonight at drawing room in Portland local filmmakers Betsy Carson and Kate Kaminiski are premiering their film "Trip."
From what I've been able to gather "Trip" is not your typical movie, and that's by choice. The name of the film seems to be something of a general outline. "Trip" is road movie, but it would probably be wrong to expect wacky hijincks, friendly or sexy hitchhikers, or musical numbers.
Here's what the news release from the filmmakers says:
"This movie really challenges some people. It's not at all about giving answers to the questions posed by the narrative. We're not talking about tired Hollywood formulas here."
The movie was made with the help of a Good Idea Grant from the Maine Arts Commission.
At the moment the producers are trying to find an avenue for the film, on the festival circuit, the Internet or elsewhere.
But tonight you can catch the 60-minute film at the drawing room, at 142 Congress Street, tonight at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 and on sale at Enterprise Records. The film will also be screened Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m.
Tonight down at the SPACE Gallery is a showing of "Billy the Kid," the documentary that looks at the life of Billy Price growing up and trying to figure out who he is in rural Maine.
Last month I had a chance to talk with the film's director, Jennifer Venditti.
It's an all-ages event, doors open at 7 p.m. with the lights going down at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $7.
