Bring National Pig Day to Maine

"Golly gee, look at the size of that sizzler Ted!"

Why didn't anyone tell me that March 1 is National Pig Day?

NATIONAL PIG DAY

Apparently there is one day a year to celebrate the animal that provides us with so much joy (vegetarians and non–pork eaters notwithstanding).

You may ask yourself how NPD came to be. The short answer is someone had the foresight to make it.

As a man whose love for bacon knows no bounds, I'm ashamed I did not know this sooner.

Though National Pig Day is seen as a day to celebrate the pig's role as a domesticated farm animal, some are using the day as an excuse to honor the culinary contributions of the curly-tailed icon.

The food blog Serious Eats has a list of "required eating" from NPD 2007. Meanwhile the AAA Leighigh Valley Iron Pigs are throwing a pig roast and selling single–game tickets.

Back in the heartland, bars and pubs in Des Moines will hold the first Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival.

Yes, you read that right. Bacon. Festival.

Here's all you need to know. Asked why anyone would hold a Bacon Festival, one of the organizers told the Des Moines Register,

"I'd answer the question with, 'Why not?' and 'Are you kidding me?' Go ask a few people what they think about eating bacon and, as long as they aren't sickly skinny, and they are from Iowa, they will tell you why."

Visitors to the first annual Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival will receive a t-shirt, a veritable bacon showcase, including a bacon-eating competition, bacon cuisine such as candied bacon, a maple bacon cheesecake with whiskey glaze, and specials such as the "Blazin' Bacon Bloody Mary" and $1 PBR.

Even with the threat of massive heart attacks and grease–related injuries, I think it's safe to say the population of Des Moines will increase on March 1.

I know I talk a big game about bacon, but it's only because I care. By now you're probably thinking, how soon did I buy my ticket to Des Moines. Well I've been to Des Moines plenty of times, and with that in mind I ask the only logical question - Why can't we hold our own bacon festival here in Portland?

Sure we may not have a big pork tradition like Iowa, where, it's true, in some parts of the state pigs outnumber people. But there are local farms here, and more importantly there are people who love food, and I don't think I am alone in my devotion to bacon.

Think about it. What's stopping us from getting all together and relaxing with a nice afternoon of bacon stuffs, wearing pig-related t-shirts, and enjoying each other's company?

Are you telling me we can't find one bar, restaurant, pub or legion hall that wouldn't host bacon lovers?

Can it be done or have I just gone bacon–mad?

I suggest the Generation NXT desk blows its yearly budget on organizing this.

I bet Dock Fore would get in on some of this action

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
