Monday Morning Round–Up

It's Monday. You know it, I know it. I'm coming off a bitter doughnut/brunch experience yesterday that still has me rattled. Let's dispense with the pleasantries and just get on with this thing.

Straight from the this morning's iHerald is Foneshow an interesting tech start–up located here in Portland.

I found out about the guys at Foneshow through some posts on CraigsList and Facebook and was interested in the concept of getting podcasts and short audio clips over your phone. I signed up last week for a few shows, The Onion and the New York Times headlines, and have been receiving them for a week. Give it a try and let us know what you think. Though the service is free and doesn't change anything in your phone plan or require new applications on your phone, it could potentially eat up minutes if you use it alot. But then again, if you can't monitor your minutes then you may have other problems.

If I was a train/bus/subway commuter I could see this being very interesting. Every morning you don't even have to bother to load a podcast or news update onto an MP3 player because Foneshow does the work instead and sends you a Text when a show is ready.
Of course the commuting options in Southern Maine are relatively small, but Foneshow is aiming for a large audience outside the borders of Maine.

Some of you may have seen me Friday night freezing my notebook off at the Portland Harbor Hotel. Alas, I was not there to take in the Ice Bar and enjoy the martinis, but was instead working. You may recall last month when I mentioned I was in video training, well, know we're starting to put it to work. Head over to the front page of PressHerald.com and go under watch and listen for the Maine Ice Carving Championship. Let me know what you think of my broadcasting career. I've already got visions of Papa Burgundy.

Speaking of Friday night I snuck in late to catch the tail end of the Honey Clouds/Phantom Buffalo show and it was migh–T fine. I mostly caught Phantom Buffalo, who never cease to wow me...although I always get stuck up on how you would classify their sound. ANYWAY, good times. Plus anyone there could not only pick up some band merch, but Honey Clouds had handmade HC statues/artwork/randomness. Beats a cheap T-shirt any day.

For those of you on the Ron Paul bandwagon you probably already know Mr. Paul is in Maine today and covering plenty of ground. He started this morning by officially opening his campaign office just down the street from Press Herald Plaza, then spoke at the University of Southern Maine, and is scheduled to visit the statehouse. If you want to find out more about the man that has developed a passionate Internet following...and potentially a blimp, today's your chance.

Finally some curious and upsetting news on The Boondocks. Animation heads, fans of the show and everyone else may be interested to know it appears the current season of Aaron McGruder's hit show on Adult Swim is getting curtailed by two episodes. The episodes have caused some hard feelings at BET, a regular target on the show and apparently again the target on the episodes in question. This is most definitely not ganstalicious. I think you have potentional in a broadcasting career afterall. Not bad for a guy that avoided TV journalism in school! It looked like the ice Maine Carving Championship was St. Paul Winter Carnival meets Chambers bar in Mpls.

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
