Feels funny doesn't it, no hype machine spinning out of control for a big game this weekend? No college football, no NFL playoffs. It's nice isn't it, kinda of relaxing, right?
Enjoy it because by this time next weekend when we're up to our eyeballs in coverage, analysts, studio hosts and beer commercials you'll want an escape.
FRIDAY
In the short time I've been in Portland I've noticed that bands have a way of forming, reforming, evolving and changing. A couple months back Honey Clouds came together from the pieces of Harpswell Sound. Trey Hughes and Ron Harrity of Harpswell are joined by Mandy Wheeler, formerly of Diamond Sharp and Sean Wilkinson, a former high school drummer (and BINGOist). They recently released their first EP and they play their first show tonight at Empire with Phantom Buffalo and Dan Blakeslee. Show's up at 9:30 p.m.
What does it say about the state of movies today that more than a few places around town are bringing back silent films, only with the benefit of live music. It starts tonight over at the Meg Perry Center on Congress Tempura, Northern B Stars and Over a Cardboard Sea are providing the soundtrack to short films starting at 6 p.m. On Wednesday and Thursday you can also check out local bluesman Samuel James will be adding music to Buster Keaton's "The General" at One Longfellow Square. Show starts at 8 p.m., tickets are $8.
SATURDAY
A Company of Girls is holding a fundraiser today at the Adams School to help generate a few dollars for programs and their new space. "It's About Time," is an art auction of sorts, with clocks painted and designed by local artists including Tim Clorious, Alex Reahlt and David Pontbriand. The event begins at 7 p.m. and is a silent auction, it's a suggested donation of $10, but also a chance to pick up some art and help a good cause.
Another dose of local rock tonight at SPACE Gallery with Cult Maze, The Octagon and The Rattlesnakes. It's an 18 plus gig, tickets are only $5 and through Brown Paper Tickets. As always doors open at 9p.m. and show kicks off at 9:30 p.m.
Just across the street if you're looking to mix things up head over to the White Heart for the the WePushButtons crew's monthly funstravaganza. Tonight's lineup includes the usuals, such as j.hjort and Mike Clouds, with special guest The Fiend. Party starts at 9 p.m
Finally your bit of weekend video goodness comes from Jerry O'Connell of all people.
Remember last week how we all found out Tom Cruise is officially ape crap crazy thanks to "The Video Seen Around the World?" Well, Jerry thought he would help out the writers guild and poke some fun at Tom and Scientology. I'd say if Jerry's career takes a dive we can blame the Scientologist following this, but really, what has he been up to?
Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove
it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine
Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the
Monday Magazine.
If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture,"
covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college
debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music
scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa
Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.
Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of
Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer,
redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life
would sound like.
When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain
America.
Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and
what they do.
