Band Aides

Just like everyone else, musicians need help too. (Sometimes they need love too, but that's another story for when you're older.)

Last fall The Portland Music Foundation formed for just that purpose.

Built on a foundation of passion and enthusiasm for local music, the people behind the PMF's only goal is for bands to do what they do now...only better.

Aside from throwing the occasional party/mixer/shindig for local musicians and others who appreciate Portland's scene, the group is also holding a series of educational workshops.

I know, I know, "educational workshop" does not have a the sexiest sound to it, but tonight's first round: "Help! I'm Stuck in my GARAGE!" should be interesting.

  • Can't find a way to record your music without breaking the bank?
  • No one interested in booking you?

Then this is the workshop for you my sad but talented friend. Head on over to the St. Lawrence Community Arts Center on Munjoy Hill. The session starts at 6:30 p.m. tonight.

Though the PMF is a membership group, tonight's opener is free and open to the public.

Coming up later this winter they'll be holding sessions on booking gigs, making the most out of studio time, and working with cranks like me in the media.

Between this and The Maine Academy of Modern Music Portland's developing a nice little musical pipeline.

No matter what you play, how many shows you've done, if you've got a complete band or you're just a fan make it a point to check out what the PMF is offering. They enable non–stop rocking.

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
