Fear and Groaning in Portland

Usually when people march it's for a cause, right? Some injustice or struggle that has sparked the masses to leave their seats and take to the streets.

So what to make of this Friday's Zombie March in Portland?

Zombie March. As in, "grrrrr....brains," parading down the streets of Portland.

This Friday zombies will be amassing in Monument Square beginning at 7:30 p.m., and from there only the laughing clown of doom knows where they will go, carrying signs with "undead Americans united," "zombies are people too," "more brains," and "zombies for Ron Paul."

The zombie march is part of a grander reign of monster terror that starts at Monument Square and ends in Merrill Auditorium on Saturday.

Motion Media, John Lane Films and Emptyhouse Films, makers of the Maine–made "Monster in the Woods," and "2," are behind the festivities. The event marks the anniversary of the zombie casting call the company put out for the making of "2" this time last year.

On Saturday it's more zombie/bigfoot goodness with "A night of Maine film and music," including a film fair for aspiring auteurs, live music and screenings of "Monster in the Woods" and "2" at the Merrill. Saturday's music comes courtesy of Covered in Bees and Live Studio Audience.

Tickets for the events, which starts at 4:30 with the film fair, are available through PortTix.

As for the matter of the undead filling our streets, slowing traffic and generally eating and terrorizing this Friday, it's important to remember a few things:

1.) Zombies for the most part are uncoordinated...unless they have the RAGE.
2.) Zombies are slow moving.
3.) Zombies are susceptible to blunt force - shovels, cricket bats, baseball bats, shotguns.
4.) Zombies are easily distracted. This in particular works if there is someone slow moving or annoying in your party. I'm not advocating it, I'm just saying, make that dead weight undead weight.

If you want to join the legions of the living dead, (heaven help you) you can find out more at Emptyhouse.

Hat Tip to Strange Maine which keeps tabs on all things Zombie.

No joke--

Andy Davis of Emptyhouse was one of my heroes when I was 12. He continues to amaze.

Great piece,

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
