The Weekend: "It's not officially winter yet" edition
OK, maybe there is nothing "it's not officially winter yet" about this week's weekend blog. No outdoor jaunts or nature walks, no bike rides, boat rides or, well, anything outdoors.
Still, take comfort (small comfort) in the fact that it's not "officially" winter until next Saturday. Until then politely (or not–so–politely) remind anyone who complains about winter that they can't do it until next week.
This also goes for people with Seasonal Affective Disorder.
Next week of course all bets are off.
FRIDAY
Somewhere Bing Cosby's ghost is crying. Or drinking. Or crying and drinking. That sounds about right. It's a once a year opportunity over at the Big Easy tonight as 18 local groups will be belting out holiday classics. Not sold? Well just think about this – Covered in Bees, Meantone, Bryzowski & DJ Graymatter, Cosades, Esperanza, Pete Kilpatrick, Twisted Roots – you get the idea. Now think of any of those bands, or another of your favorites, singing "Silver Bells," or "Walkin' in a Winter Wonderland." Yeah, you know you're gonna be there. It's Home for the Holidays, WCYY style. Proceeds from the event will help the Center for Grieving Children. Doors open at 9 p.m., it's $6 to get in.
Satellite Lot is holding a CD Release party at SPACE tonight. The electronica/rock, (can I say "rocktronica?" Sounds like a rock opera. Hmmmm...) The band's latest release is "Sleepwalk in a Burning Building." They've got a sound that I think is somewhere between the likes of Air and Zero 7 and 80s bands like Depeche Mode and The Cure. Tonight's openers include Diamond Sharp and Elf Princess Gets a Harley. Yes, you read that right, Elf Princess Gets a Harley. I love band names. Tickets are $5, doors are at 9 p.m.
The Annual Royal Majesty Drag Show is upon us. Attention queens – it is time to rejoice and dig out your finest competition gown. The annual event by the University of Southern Maine's Center for Sexualities and Gender Diversity has hosted the event/benefit for eight years now. The event, which is over at the Holiday Inn by the Bay, is $8, $5 for USM students. Doors open at 8 p.m.
SATURDAY
These guys must love Portland. Seriously, how many times have Mr. Lif and Akrobatik come to Portland in the last year? Sure they're out of Boston, so it's a short trip, but still, good effort gentlemen. Lif is the "headliner," thouogh I am sure it wouldn't be unheard of if Akro jumped in for a few songs. BUT WAIT, there's more! With the local assist tonight are LabSeven, Mike Blast and Cojaxx. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., tickets are $15 in advance, $18 at the door.
Did I perhaps mention there was a show at the Big Easy tonight featuring some this year's newest local rock bands? (Shameless Podcast Plug. Actually, is it so shameless? This is the NXT blog, I should have no shame plugging things on here.) ANYWAY, it's WCYY Class of 2007 performance, featuring Highway Jackson, Dominic and the Lucid, Ruin and Hiss and Chambers. Doors open at 5 p.m., tickets are $8 and available at the door.
SHOP! Oh it's that time of year boys and girls... Rogue's Gallery is holding another sample sale. As the announcer is fond of saying, "ONE DAY ONLY! SATURDAY, SATURDAY, SATURDAY!" Today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. over at SPACE Gallery you can find some of the finest fashions, particularly those with a nautical theme. Though Rogues is well known for its t–shirts (and I am a man who loves some t–shirts, just ask the good people at Threadless), the company's offerings are much more diverse. Stop by because the prices will be much more loose than you would typically find for these items.
Finally, our video o' the week comes from NXT reader Réal, who is turning into the ironman of links and online video. I don't know how he keeps finding these things, but he does.
I am not sure if this is a product of Japanese or Chinese TV, either way it is insane, and involves monkeys. More directly it involves monkeys and dogs. I have no idea what is going on, maybe an intrepid NXT reader can make sense of it.

it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine
Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the
Monday Magazine.
If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture,"
covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college
debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music
scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa
Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.
Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of
Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer,
redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life
would sound like.
When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain
America.
Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and
what they do.
