Free For All

Picture 9_375x306.shkl.png

Growing up we all had art class and between our teacher and parents there was always someone to appreciate our creations.

Macaroni necklaces, those creepy silhouette things that always made your head look big, finger paintings with brown as the primary color. These were all things only a mother, or a public school art teacher, could love.

Those days everyone was an artist, but unless you went to art school or had a serious passion for the arts, most of us are content to visit galleries rather than try and get something featured at one.

This week SPACE Gallery is opening an exhibition called Free for All, where what you'll see on display is art from anyone and everyone.

In this week's podcast I had a conversation with Elizabeth Atterbury, SPACE's exhibitions coordinator, about the idea behind Free for All.

Unlike shows you may see at other galleries, Free For All has no submission fee and no selection process. Atterbury said they wanted to throw things open to everyone, which means you'll see art from kids, textile artists, graphic designers and just about everyone. Anything that was submitted was put up.

Atterbury described it as an experiment, meaning, if things go relatively well you may see another show like this sometime in the future.

It's a pretty sweet opportunity, going from unknown to a gallery show with the potential to sell one of your pieces.

Since today's the First Friday Artwalk there will be plenty of folks out and about. Head over to SPACE for the opening reception which starts at 5 p.m. The show runs through Dec. 20.

Many thanks to the crew at SPACE for letting me drop in, and also to Cosades and Labor Day Records for the music in this week's show.

Musicians – if you've got music you want to get out there, we'd love to have it and showcase it. If you've got music you'd like to send our way, show suggestions or submissions, you can e–mail me or IM me at JustinNXT.

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
