Records for Days

I think anyone would have a hard time turning their back on $2 records.
OK, maybe some people aren't compatible with the vinyl, which is cool, because at the WMPG record sale, they also had CDs for low, low prices.

This is not an infomercial, just this week's podcast.

You may recall last weekend I spent a little time going on and on and on about the WMPG record sale.

Before your eyes roll back in your head, just stay with me for a second.

Do you like music?

Do you like a good deal?

(Sorry, I'm falling back on that infomercial thing.)

The annual WMPG record sale has a lot going for it, namely, row after row of records.

Musty, surprising, hilarious and obscure records.

Sure not all of the records are obscure – I did see some WHAM! – but part of the joy of going to the sale is flipping through the boxes and uncovering the unexpected.
There could also be some very high unintentional comedy, like a Bing Crosby album sitting next to Al. B Sure.

How else could you explain why I was giving serious thought to buying Rod Stewart's "Gasoline Alley," or Toto's "Hydra?"

But you do have to have some dedication and a little bit of paticence. There could be that rare, limited run album you've always wanted just waiting somewhere 12 boxes deep in the sale.

Each year you're likely to find DJs and record collectors alike lining up outside the sale before the doors open, much like addicts looking for their methadone, only considerably less grim.

This is my third go round at the record sale, and each year I end up going with an equal number of albums to listen to and hang on the wall.

From the looks of this year's sale there are plenty of other people who feel the same way. Jim Rand, WMPG's station manager, said they typically raise around $5,000, which really helps the station's operating budget.

Thanks in this week's show goes out to WMPG and all the MPGers who make the record sale work. Thanks also goes to Slowing Room for again providing this week's music.

If you've got an idea for a show, want to contribute or have some music you'd like to have featured, e–mail me or IM me at JustinNXT.

On a completely unrelated note – Happy Thanksgiving!

Justin is a former newspaper intern and has the scar tissue to prove it. Justin has been a staff writer for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram since 2003, and in 2004 began writing a weekly column in the Monday Magazine.

If he had to pick a label, the column would fall under "youth culture," covering everything from high school dance etiquette, dealing with college debt, the resurgence of Roller Derby and Portland's one-of-a-kind music scene. This of course has not stopped him from answering letters to Santa Claus or writing about his experience riding shotgun in a drift car.

Justin is an export from the Midwest. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and is originally from Minnesota. He enjoys bacon, cheap beer, redheads, Burt Reynolds jokes and wondering what the soundtrack to his life would sound like.

When he grows up he wants to be an international art thief. Or Captain America.

Until then he'll be bringing you dispatches about "the young people" and what they do.
